I've got some general questions about my equipment.  I have a few years old set of Jack Nicolaus Golden Bear irons.  They came in a boxed set with all 14 clubs and a bag; my wedges, driver and putter have been upgraded, but I've been holding off on the irons because they can get expensive.  I was thinking about upgrading next spring, but decided I'd rather put the money towards the adoption process and simply got them regripped this week, thinking that would be good enough for now (I went from a standard size grip to an undersize and love it).  While I was at the golf store, I began thinking about looking into getting my irons reshafted next spring.

Will this have much of an effect?  Will I really notice much of a difference between my stock shafts?  This past spring I got fitted for a set of Titleists at a demo day at my home course, and they fitted me for the True Temper Dynamic Gold shaft, a still shaft.  Is it possible to buy this shaft and have it put on my irons?  If so, where would I look for prices?  Speaking of prices, how much would I be looking at spending?  If it's a few hundred dollars, I'll probably just put that money towards a whole new set, but if it's $100-$150 or below I'll seriously look into it. Please keep in mind that I'm not what you'd call mechanically inclined and will be having a golf shop do the reshafting work for me.

Thanks in advance for all the help!  I'm not new to golf, but am new to upgrading equipment like this.

The best way to find out prices is to call your local golf stores. I would be willing to bet you are looking at a minimum of $30 per club for the shaft and the installation.

Call around; but $30/club seems right.

You can buy the shafts alone on eBay (from a reputable seller) for about $70 for the set (eight shafts)... I know there's a guy around me that charges $10/club to install the shafts if you already got them; so that's another $80... right there thats $150 and you still have to put on new grips, plus taxes and shipping.  All that considered you're looking at a minimum of $200; that's probably more than the irons are worth... I'd put that towards a new set.

Thanks for the input guys.  It looks like it's going to cost more than I'd like to spend to get the shafts upgraded.  I think I'll just put the money towards a new set of clubs.  Thanks again!

Yes, I would buy a new set of irons.  Boxed golf club sets are fine when you start the game, but I would not spend any money to reshaft them.  Since you are not going to reshaft them yourself, it will cost you $.  Buy a name brand used or new on ebay with your shaft.  The right shaft will increase distance and control.  You can go from a Regular flex graphite shaft to a Stiff flex steel shaft and gain distance.  A used name brand set is often better than a boxed set or no brand set.

If you got fitted by a skilled clubsmith, the new shaft would probably make a difference since it fits you. But, you would need to test shaft + head to see if it would work. A DG-shafted AP1 might not fly the same as a DG-shafted GB.  What kind of shaft do the GB irons have?

You could always "split the difference" and get a used set of brand-name irons with DG S300 shafts. You could probably find a set of first-wave AP1s for $400 or less. You might contact Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy and see what they have.

    • Terry - what a story…I’m about 12 yrs your junior but I do have friends in similar places of life. Like others have said - “go for it”.  The fact that you’re willing to challenge yourself in the midst of dealing with something like Parkinson’s is hero level stuff….looking forward to seeing how this great adventure plays out and make sure to get some of it on video as well.  Make them memories dude!
    • Played nine today. Just went out trying to make a swing that had the feels of what I am working on. I would give it a C- at best. The best swing came on the 9th hole, 220 yard par 3, downwind. I finally made a swing where I felt the pause, and the arms down stuff like I practice. I hit the 4 iron about 215 yards, it rolled just off the back of the green about 20-Ft from the pin.  I might play 10 yards shorter on every iron shot, and make that pause swing, cause I can still hit it about 90-95% the distance.  Distance wedges or 3/4 wedges are going to different. Shanked two of them today trying the pause, arms down stuff. Might spend a bit of time looking at the video on those shots specifically.
    • Day 350: good practice session today. Hit about 25 balls, working slowly on my priority piece. It looks decent in slow motion. Better at full speed but not quite there. Then putted for about an hour. Focused on putts inside 10’ but also did a stack putting session.
    • Two of my golfing Buddie's are left handed. I will play a couple of rounds and use their clubs and see how I do.  Played last Thursday and had the worst game ever. (Playing in really strong winds. (SW @ 20 to 30 mph with > gusts.)  Will let everyone know when I get back out. May not play until Monday.   Thanks everyone, for your encouragement.    Terry
