I recently hurt my finger and a few X-rays later it was diagnosed as "Mallet Finger". I have to wear a splint for 6 weeks. Would you advise I stay away from the course? What can I do so I am not as isolated from golf?

Personally I would stay from the course, I am not sure what a splint on the finger is but by the sounds of it you would need to alter your grip to allow for the splint and it could affect how you play after it is taken off.

I am on the same boat, after my operation later in the year I will be in a cast for 12 weeks so I will not be able to play and will be completely isolated from the range/course but I do have my PS3 and Tiger Woods :)

I hurt my thumb. Got a special splint made to play in Scotland on a trip that had been planned for over a year. Splint designed to allow me to play and delay surgery. Played bad but enjoyed the trip. After surgery, I had pins and things and could not swing a club without potentially doing damage. So...

I practiced putting for many months and got back into full-swing golf when I was healed.

I'd see if you can have the splint shaped to allow you to hold your putter and become a great putter. BTW, I did not become a great putter.

Depends on which finger the splint is on doesn't it? Hogan suggested that you could play with the right hand index and thumb completely off the club (http://golfcomplex.com/images/blog/hogan/hogan-pincer-b-150.jpg)

Even so, get your Doctor to assure you that impact of club on ball/dirt will not add damage or prolong recovery.

If it's your left pinky (if you're a righty), expect a fade. I played last month and I had a huge bloody blister on my right pinky and I tended to fade kinda weak just by 5 yards or so. (for a lefty)

Hey there. I just found out I have Mallet Finger. They put the splint on & I did some chipping this morning & not really a problem. I am a little bit afraid to hit full shots though. Although I am wearing the splint, it will definitely alter my grip somewhat & I will probably play badly. So 8 weeks is a long time but I also play guitar very avidly & I really don't want to jeopardize that by any means. I just hope & pray that the splint works. Good luck to you as well.

Well, tried hitting a full shot with my splint on. Ain't gonna happen. Bummer. Gonna be tough to not play golf for 8 weeks. I hope I can keep this splint on for that long. Gonna be tough. In my fourth day now & so far I haven't taken it off.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
