Sorry I was too excited not to post this, everything finally came together at the same time and I finally got a score I knew I had potential to get for a while now.

It was raining lightly the whole time which felt really good.  Got paired up with a foursome of pretty good people so I was a bit nervous...turns out I didnt need to be.

I decided to not hit the driver the entire day (Still hit it 3 times but they went okay) and decided to use my 52* wedge instead of my 60* to chip.  I also just got my putter shortened because it was way to long.

Chipping is by far the worst part of the game, it would not be an exaggeration to say I give up 8-10 shots per round just from chipping.  Well I finally decided to give up on my 60* wedge and used my 52.  It changed everything, I was chipping better then I ever have,  did not shank any, and even chipped one in for par.

My iron play was also great today, hit 5 GIR's and came close a bunch of other times.

Combine all that with my putter being on fire (for me at least) and I shot my best round ever of an 88! I think I will be able to consistently stay in the 90's now as long as I keep using my 52* wedge and working a lot on chipping/putting.

Here is my scorecard.  So pumped!  Did not have anything over a 6 and only one triple bogey.

Yeah the triple on 4 was really frustrating, I hit it into the trees but was able to punch it under onto the green.  My putter betrayed me on that hole though, 3 putts on par 3's are killer.

Pretty detailed scorecard.  I would say you played quite a bit better on the back nine (since it is 2 more shots to par and you had the same score).  Also with the putts in consideration it only took you 24 shots to get on the greens on the back nine and 27 to get on the greens for the front nine.

Yeah I felt like I hit my irons almost perfectly on the back 9.  Had a few bad ones on the front that really hurt me.

I would have liked to have hit a few more fairways as well but I was just a few feet off several times.

37 putts. Work on your putting and you will be getting closer to 80.

Not that I can tell anyone they should work on their putting

Isnt it amazing the feeling you get when all the clubs in your bag show up at the same time!! Well done!!

Picture the shot.....Believe the picture....

Yeah I know I still need to work a lot on my putting.  37 putts is actually good for me sadly.

A few days ago I putted 36 times on 12 holes but that was before I got my putter cut down and it was just completely in my head after a few holes.  I couldn't buy a putt that day.

Congrats on breaking 90!  Hoping to get on the course this weekend.

Nice job! Next stop 79!

And yeah, no more chipping with the 60. That's just a bad plan. If you're going to use a single club around the green at least use your SW and take advantage of the forgiveness the extra bounce gives you. Take a look at this for a real simple approach:

Great job! I think if you can get all those 3 putts down to just 2 or even 1, you'll be consistently be shooting in the low 80s. Keep it up.

Did you chip in on 4 or was that a putt from off the green.

Ryan

I chipped it in with my 52*, I was pretty pumped to save a par there.   That shot is what started off my hot streak and it just never ended.

What do you guys recommend I work on next aside from chipping and putting? I have another lesson next Friday and can't decide if I want to spend half of it working on learning how to hit the driver.  I am terrible with it but I am not sure if I would get more benefit out of that or just working on chipping and putting the whole lesson.

Your approach shots (IMO) would probably be best - within 150 yards. Try and get more GIR! If you can get at least 10 GIR, you'll definitely be shooting in the low 80s or possibly breaking 80

Ryan

I am actually half decent from within 150 yards.  I would say from 100-150 is the most solid part of my game.  The problem is getting my tee shots there, the longest club I am confident hitting is my 3 hybrid and I only hit that about 210, which means I still have about another 190 yards to go if the hole is over 400 yards.  If I could get another 20-30 yards out of my tee shots I think it would improve my GIR's. I am going to get a 3 wood this Sunday, hopefully I will be able to control that a little better than my driver.

Alright. I think you have a game plan for your next lesson. In all honesty, if you can get 230-240 with your 3 wood, on most courses, that sets you up pretty well for your second shot. I think the 3 wood is a lot easier to control compared to the driver. Good luck!

Well done, congrats! :) I've not hit my driver on the last few rounds either and it lowered my score and saved me a few strokes on 'lost balls'. I'm in pretty much the same situation and some extra distance with a 3w would be nice, but in your case some help with the chipping might not be bad either. Maybe divide things over 2 lessons so you don't get too much info and things to work on at once?

    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
    • Day 31 (2 Jan 26) - Usual Friday men’s group shootout - good day of shot making  as most shots were right on line to the target point.  Putter and green reads were solid with some great par saves and a really tricky birdie.
    • Day 13 - 2026-01-02 One hour short game work. Chipping balls to different targets, compass putting drill with 2-3% slope.
