Hey everyone, so I have been struggling like crazy with my driver. I hit the crap out of it (300-350 yards) but lately I have been either blocking it out way right or hitting a crazy top spinning duck hook. I included one video of my iron swing, which I dont have any problems with. So to all, what am I doing different between the two swings? any insight as to what would be causing me blocking or hooking the ball? thanks a lot

ok i dont think this is a good thing...

the club is bowed a ton at impact here, I am not using a stiff flex, could this be part of the problem?

this picture doesnt look good either...

I recently walked into my local golf store and found a used version of my current driver head (but different loft) with a stiff flex for $35. If money is tight buy used and a generation or two back.

The shaft looks like it flexes like it does because of the way that the camera assembles the picture as it takes it. The video of tiger's swing was probably taken with a better camera and therefore doesn't look like it is flexing to the max. If you look in the most recent issue of golf digest, there are swing sequences of robert garrigus and brittany lincicome (both considered long hitters in their respective tours) and their shaft at impact looks exactly like yours.

It's just a camera illusion. Your shaft is not bending that much.

hmm okay then the shaft isnt the problem. (Dang I thought that would be an easy fix, but then again, nothing in golf ever is.) so with that in mind, any ideas as to why i would block out right or hit a duck hook only with the driver and not irons?

I agree. One of the recent issues of Golf Digest had that exact same illusion in two pros swings in the frame by frame breakdown.

Hmmm, didn't know that. Intereseting.

try swinging your driver easier to see if you hit it straight or better. Having a shaft that is not stiff enough will cause a top spinning ball that just goes straight down

I'm definitely not a swing expert, nor someone who should be giving out advice on swinging a club but look at Grumpter's post with the still of Tiger and the still of you. His left hand looks much more open. It may be a simple hands issue. The shaft flex may be nothing more than a ruse.

    • Have you tried hanging?  Find a pull up bar or whatever.  Grab it with both hands and hang without your feet touching the floor.  I had bad issues over last winter and a friend suggested it.  It was like is decompresses everything in my spine and I have been fine ever since.
    • Believe it or Not! I am so excited.  Yesterday, on a hot and windy day, I played a 9 hole course in Claflin. Kansas. 1st 9 = 54 2nd 9 = 43   I am going to try and go back out late this afternoon and play 18 holes at Hays, Kansas.  My 3 hybrid came in yesterday and I am really anxious to try it out.  WooHoo 🥳 🙌 👏  Retired Old Man, Terry

    • Looking forward to reading and contributing to some of the great discussions here. I've "played" for a few years, but very much feel like I'm in the beginner/new to golf stage. I'm wanting to set some attainable goals for this year, and hopefully share some of it here along the way. Thanks for reading!
    • First, you have some great choices in there.  Event Horizon remains a birdie movie for me.  It still finds its way onto the October options as Halloween approaches.  It fits well. I continue to forget that Arrival, when being referenced, is not the Charlie Sheen movie I saw in middle school. Lastly, what rating are you giving HG2?  Was it a par?  Bogey?  I gather from your review it didn't earn a hole in one on a par-4.  (I have yet to decide how I'm prioritizing that on my movie queue, and if I should even bother, so I'm looking forward to reviews here)
