Went out today and went 43 38 for 81 +10. Started double, triple, bogey and got better from their. My trouble on the first 3 was hitting the ball thin. Hitting it thin has always been my major miss. Could it be because of not enough forward press in my set up?

I have no idea, since I can't see your swing, and even if I could, I'm highly unqualified to analyze it. The last thing you need is a guy who can't break 100 telling you how to swing a club.

That having been said, I can tell you what worked for me when I went through something similar. It used to be, for me, either driving range or play, not both. This was back during my par-3 courses only days. I would hit the ball poorly for the first 6 holes... pretty bad if you're only playing nine! Then I hit a few balls - even as few as 20 - and hit most of them poorly. Then I'd hit it well for most of the day... at least, I can hit it my usual way. So, the question is: what's your warmup routine? I notice you went +10 for the round, but +6 on the first three. That means you played 15 holes at +4.

Today warmup up was little to nothing it was a last minute golf outing. Although you do make a good point about the warm up, I hadn't thought about.

The thing I focused on or "swing thought" after the first three was forward press (hands ahead of the ball at set up), and it seemed to work. Just wondering if having having the hands/shaft in line with the ball creates a thin shot?

Today warmup up was little to nothing it was a last minute golf outing. Although you do make a good point about the warm up, I hadn't thought about.

I know very little about the causes of swing mistakes, other than overthinking during action causes swing faults... my frequent mistake. I'm an overanalyst in most things.

I'd bet that the no warmup was the cause of the bad shots. My suggestion, easier said than done, is to not worry about it, so the thoughts of it don't enter your head. Relive the back 15 instead of the front 3

Don't get too caught up on the whole forward press stuff...9 times out of 10 chances are it's just a slight problem with your ball position. Take an extra second during your pre-shot routine to check on your ball position and concentrate on striking down through the ball.

Not really a forward press at the BEGINNING of the swing.. on the forward swing your hands need to be ahead. Full EXTENSION does not happen until AFTER impact. I just posted a drill to work on this.

Sorry to say but I do not think they drill will help me, as my second most often miss is high/long hook. Although, watching/listening to your youtube tip and reading other comments, is that my ball position maybe be the biggest problem.

But the EXTENSION is necessary. Right now you are not staying LOW

PAST the ball.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.


If your primary miss is thin, and now you say your secondary miss is a high hook, this can be very easily diaganosed as a slight ball position problem. Your obviously positioning the ball just a bit too far forward in your stance. Which will cause you to strike it thin in most cases and when you do happen to stay down through the ball at contact your impact is so far forward that you have already begun to release your clubhead and you're beginning your upswing causing the high ballooned hook...

keep an eye on your ball position and you should be able to clear this right up

I'm not a big fan of the forward press, as I believe it messes with my takeaway (disrupts triangle too soon, getting the club too far ahead of the hands). My setup has the shaft pretty much vertical, and promotes a "swing the bucket" type of setup.

I would say that the forward press may be the culprit to your draw, as it may be closing your clubface at setup. Just a thought. Typically your setup is a good indicator of how you'll hit the ball.

Perhaps your posture (too upright and tall) caused you to hit thin shots, and as you got warmed up and more comfortable, your posture eventually corrected itself for the rest of the round. Only thing I can think of since you were lights out for last 15 holes!!

    • If I can take a full swing, I'll use the stock club for that yardage.  I can't really get creative.  Just don't have that ability.  In the past, I used a sand wedge for all my shots around the green, opening or closing the face and moving the ball back or forward in my stance to get the flight I wanted.  I am trying now to use different clubs around the green.  I'm less likely to flub it but I struggle with distance control.  More practice required.
