So lately I have been having trouble making contact on the fat part of the driver face. I always get it towards the heel, unless I align the toe with the ball at address. Perhaps this is a plane issue. I don't do this with irons or even woods. Is there a good drill to remedy this?

Without actually seeing a video of your swing, I'd wager that you're standing too close to the ball, or are leaning forward. Try backing up half an inch (but still keeping the center of the driver on the ball), or leaning back slightly.

Yeah, I think so too. Without actually looking your swing it's difficult to tell. But, you might be standing too far or too close. The reason is because you're compensating during the downswing. You're instinctively trying to hit the ball. Here's to know, did your arms extend more than normal or break down before the impact? If you extend your arms forward, that means you're standing too far. While if your arms break down (like pulling the club toward yourself), it means you're standing too close. I hope this helps.

B-Rad - have you tried a different driver? Shafts are so different from each other, and judging by your hcp index, it "could" be that you have a driver, the shaft of which doesn't match your swing speed. This could mean that you don't feel any decent whip and feedback from the club on the downswing, and that you maybe feel that you are swinging a telephone pole at the ball - with this kind of feeling, your subconscious maybe making you stand up a bit through the impact area, which would take you away from the ball and give you a heel impact. If the shaft were softer, you might just feel more confident to keep your posture intact, and that would possibly ensure a more central-faced strike. But this is all conjecture, until we see a video of how you really do it. If you do post a video, try to get it shot from down the line as well as straight on. In the meantime, DON'T keep practising alone! Get a PGA pro lesson to sort it out, or you will just ingrain all the bad stuff!

As some have said, you may be too close...

Check to see if your arms hang naturally from your shoulders... I try to get my hands close to a line under my chin.. but I'm more upright ( 2 plane) versus someone who may be bent over more ( 1 plane)...

Also, it never hurts to have your clubs fitted by a professional, and most likely some you trust.. Have your clubs looked at when you feel your swing is in it's 'normal' state. They will check the lies, and sometimes an adjustment here could be beneficial. I play with 'stock' clubs, and noticed a trmendous difference in 'feel' when they were done to my specifications.. This also included getting your grip size checked, lofts and lies... and don't forget your flatstick!!!!

Good luck!!!!!!!!1

I'm having the same problem and haven't been able to isolate the cause. I've tried standing closer to the ball, standing farther from the ball, moving the ball forward, moving the ball back. At this point I'm pretty convinced it's a mental thing. When I do hit it anywhere near the center, it's usually on the crown, but that's a whole other problem.

I had the same problem, and I just stood further away from the ball, and leaned back slightly, and it was fixed, keep trying and I'm sure you'll find out.

FOLLOW UP:

So I have been practicing my address distance from the ball. That's where the problem was. I was set up too near to the ball. Some bad habit I picked up along the way. A good rule that I focus on now is keeping approximately 1 open hands length between the end of the grip and my body.

Thanks guys, you nailed it.

    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.
    • That depends what you do within those two.  Are they your only options?   Check out Fit for Golf if you get a moment.  It's linked on the sidebar;  I did it for two years, stopped for a really bad reason, and I plan to get back to it soon.   Mike Carroll also has a great free podcast about a lot of topics in golf fitness.
    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
