I am considering chopping down my driver shaft to 44.5 inches ( currently 46 )

My main issue with my driver is low ball flight.

My misses left or right are even ( ie, I don't favour a slice or a hook ), but I am hitting it low all the time.

Will this help or make it worse?

You should get a bit more control with a shorter shaft, but may lose some distance. (Unless the shorter shaft helps you find the sweet spot more often and you hit the ball more solidly).

I don't think it will help get the ball higher, though. It sounds like maybe you need a different shaft. Either one with a lower kick point or perhaps one that is a little less stiff (or both).

Butt trimming the shaft won't have any real effect on ball flight.  As ronc noted, it sounds like you may just need a different shaft with a lower kick point.  You might also try teeing the ball up a little bit higher and a little bit more forward in your stance.

Why not choke up and see what it does for you?  What loft is the driver?  Try a more sweeping blow, I'll bet you have a descending blow now.

I already have a flat swing...but I think my hands are far too forward of the club

I went and shortened it last night - the shorter the club the more upright the swing right? I can stand a little closer to the ball etc now

Was hitting it fine on the simulator - as accurate as that is I don't know, but will hit the range tonight and see

I may have to get some lead tape, as it feels like I am swinging a feather a little bit

Should have had them throw on a winn lite grip to offset the loss of swing weight.

-1.5" = 9 SW's less.

It will take 18g of head weight to get back to the original SW.  That is about 36" of standard 1/2" tape (1" = .5g) or 18" of high density tape (1" = 1g).  Either way, that's gonna be a lot of tape!  A new penny is 2.5g, maybe you should first try duct taping about 7-8 pennies to the head one the rear of the sole just to see how you like the feel of the club with the SW back to about where it was.

Then, if it feels good, maybe you could pull the shaft and use an 8g or 10g tip weight, then the amount of lead tape needed would be much less and a little more reasonable to use, like 10g/10" of high density tape.  Or you could weight the inside of the head with rat glue.  Then when adding the weight, concentrate it on the sole at the very back of the head.  As for a lighter grip, the Winn Lite is 25g, and will bring it back up by 5 SW's, leaving you with only 4 SW's worth of weight to add to the head.  But that only works if you like those grips, which I don't. The lighter grip will change the SW on the scale, but it doesn't really effect the heft of the club that you feel, the reasoning for fixing the swing weight.  What it really changes is the balance point of the club.
