Went to Dick's the other day on the hunt for new balls and took home 2 dozen Maxfli HT Feel's (2 for $30) which is a budget minded urethane spin ball. Something I felt like trying just for the hell of it  to see what kind of spin I could get out a $1.33 ball. Also saw the commercial and chatter on here about the new Srixon Q-star.

First Impressions:

Q star: looks and feels like pure quality. A soft(er) ionomer(?) cover, similar to the NXT Tour and similar graphics to the Z-star.

HT Feel: Stamping looks cheap. For a urethane ball there is some kind of coating that feels very slick. Can definitely dig a fingernail in to the cover.

On the course:

HT Feel: It felt pretty good off the face of the club and spun as good as any tour ball I've ever played. You can really shape and stop these things. Very spinny around the green. Durability is absolute garbage. I took these to a short game area at my home course and the covers were shredding off without even full swings, and they turn all kinds of ugly brown/green after a few full swings.

Q-Star: Much more consistently within my yardage windows. These play like a souped up NXT Tour, which I believe they are intended to compete with. Pretty straight off the tee, plenty long enough for me. And they live up to the advertising on these in the spin department. These don't spin like a urethane ball, but it is very close. I spun back a 47* PW from 120 about 5 feet. The only thing I don't like with these is they seem hotter off the putter than I'm used to, but they felt good.

Final thoughts:

If you are looking for the cheapest/spinniest ball combo, check out those HT feels. @ $15 a box, I doubt you could find a better spin ball for the money.

If you like the NXT Tour or any other high end non urethane ball you owe it to yourself to try this ball. I think I've found a winner in this ball. Until now I was convinced the NXT tour was the best fall for my game, but these Srixons are more durable and spin more and are also $5 cheaper per dozen.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
