Appropriate Tee Box

If I'm playing a course I know, it's an easy decision. On a strange course, I check the scorecard to see what the lengths are from the various tee boxes. I usually play the tees that are from 6000 to 6500 yards. If the course is noted to be difficult, I'll go for the shorter end of that range until I've played it at least once. Then I might modify my tee selection. I like to be able to enjoy a new course right from the first time out, and sometimes that means playing from a shorter tee until I get some familiarity with it.

Fortunately I don't have to deal with an ego that always demands that I play the tips... some courses just don't work for me from the tips, and that has nothing to do with length. I can hit a 270 yard drive, but that doesn't mean that I have to do so on every hole to get the most out of a course.

This has saved me so much on my score. White tees vs blues isn't huge at my home course, but for a few holes, it makes a big difference.
