Hi All,

Just played my first round in about ten years and i was of course terrible ;)

I'm in my late 20's now but was a pretty good player in my late teens ( i think i was playing off 8-9 ).

I have a couple of problems that i need to solve but haven't a clue where to start. I'm thinking New clubs or a fitting of my old clubs is needed so that's why i post this here.

Ok, So my main problem is i am slicing every shot i hit from a driver up to about a 6-7 iron and I'm blading my short irons . I'm using my old set of clubs which are are cheapish set of macgregor. I have grown about 8-12 inches ( I'm 6'3" ) since i used / bought them and i feel they are simply to short, The driver and woods with them are also short plus i feel the sweet spot on them is pretty small ie the head on the driver seems to be only about 60% the size of the drivers i see around these days.

My second problem is that both my thumbs blistered fairly fast ( I used a glove ).. I thinking this is either just a problem with my grip that can be fixed fairly easily or that this is also a result of my clubs. By that i mean I am somehow compensating for playing with non optimal clubs by gripping tighter or swinging harder than i should.

So this is where I'm at. Do i just go and get new clubs and hit the driving range or do i work with my existing clubs and possibly get new woods and a driver.

If I am getting new clubs should i get them fitted to me? Should i be looking at Irons and Woods/drivers as seperate purchases or Is a set of all clubs a better option. I'm fairly confident i can get my game back once im comfortable with whatever clubs i am using but I'm not sure on how to proceed form here ( dont wanna spend a lot of money on new ones if i end up in the same position but also dont wanna waste time with my old clubs if it isn't going to resolve my issues )

Anyway i think that is it in a nutshell, sorry for the long post.

Any help is appreciated greatly.

Thanks

Gav

If your grips are 10 years old the blisters probably came from holding them too tight, which leads to the slices etc.

Better clubs are not sold in sets. The irons, woods and driver are sold separately.

Mac Gregor made some pretty easy to hit models, as easy as anything made today. Depending on the model you may want to hold onto them until you have a game going for you.  Shafts can be extended for about $3 when re-gripping.

Thanks,

Ok so I'm probably going to keeps my irons for the time being, they are macgregor mcx from early 2000 i assume ( cant find a picture of em ) and get them lengthened and re-gripped. They look cheaper than other MCX clubs i can find through google, on the back they are grey with the MCX being in gold, they should do me right?

I'm definitely getting a new driver and probably woods, the driver i have is not forgiving at all. So, I'm thinking either mid range new or higher range used. Any suggestions on a forgiving driver / woods?

Cheers

The grips on the clubs and shorter shafts could be the cause of all your problems. Getting them fit to you will help greatly. If your still interested in piecing together a newer set on a budget, try out craigslist, ebay, or sites like rockbottomgolf.com or clearance/sale sections in your local sporting goods/golf store. As for brands to try out, Adams, Ping, Cleveland, and Taylor Made are the first to come to mind.

I can't find your MCX clubs being reviewed on golfreview, com and that's not good. The pictures I saw on E-bay for MCX are not the easy to hit models. You should look around before spending the money re-gripping, extending and having the lies adjusted.

I'm heading driving range with a friend i used to play with on wednesday ( he kept playin and is pretty good now ) gonna ask his advice.

But yeah thanks for the help, I'm looking for "easy" to hit clubs so maybe an upgrade is the best..
