A few months ago, I played golf with my grandparents, and did reasonably well for my first time every playing in over 10 years (185 5-wood, 140 7-iron, 105 9-iron).  These numbers do not include roll.

I just got an internship that pays pretty well, and I'm extremely bored on the weekends, so I kind of want to pick up golf.

I used my grandpa's clubs; they were graphite shafts.  I hit steel shafts a couple months ago, and honestly, I like the graphite shafts much, much better (lighter, easier to control, etc.)  Besides, my swing speed is pretty slow I think.

I was looking at the Callaway X-20's, are these good for beginners?  I've seen the graphite version on the internet for around 350 for 5-PW (not like a beginner like me is going to ever use a 3 or 4 iron).  They look a bit thick; my grandpa's irons were a bit thinner, does this matter?

Are there any other good iron sets out there for starting players like me?

Thanks.

EDIT:  Should've mentioned this earlier: I'm 20, 5'6", 145 lbs (not a big strong guy).

All the higher end clubs are good. If you want light the burner 2.0 are pretty light and the ping g15 are light as well, they also come with graphite but are a bit pricey. Nice thing about the ping is they can be matched to you. The x series are great, best thing is to head to dicks and start hitting clubs until one feels good.

Get fitted based on you measurements. Things like distance from finger tips to floor and hand size. Any big-box store can do this. Then look at Super Game Improvement clubs that are fit to your size. Many like Adams hybrid sets and they can be ordered to your specs.

More important than which club is getting clubs that fit you. If you learn with clubs that do not fit, you will learn bad compensations while the clubs trying to make the ball go straight. So you will create a flawed swing that sorta works. If your clubs fit, correct swings yield best results. So you will teach yourself a better swing.

The X-20s are "thinner" than many GI irons and should allow more workability.  Since you're a beginner, the X-20s are still technically game improvement irons but you may be better off with a set with wider soles (super game improvement like mentioned above) which will provide more forgiveness.  Maybe consider Cobra S3 Max irons with 3-5 hybrids; they're available on eBay for a lot less than at stores.

I actually just ordered a new set of the X-20s with steel shafts (current have graphite but think I prefer steel) and am anxious to see how I like them.  Never seen them in my life but the deal was too good to pass up at $340 for brand new set of 3-PW.  If I like the X-20s, they'll be replacing my Cobra S3 Max set.

Always changing:

Driver: Cobra S2/Nike VR Pro 10.5º

Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour 4-9i

Hybrid: Titleist 910H 19º & 21º

Wood: TaylorMade R11 3w

Putter: Odyssey White Hot

Wedges: Titleist Vokeys - 48º, 54º, 62º

First round: February 2011

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
    • Day 2, 12/31/25.  Similar to yesterday (rainy, no surprise), I hit primarily 6-iron full swings with the same focus;  I also hit some chips (about 1/8 swing) with the 54.  About two dozen full swings and an equal number of short shots.  All of this was indoors, off a mat, into a net, real balls.
