Hi All,

First time, long time.

I'm nearing completion of my 3rd season playing.  I'm fortunate enough to play alot and I've been taking lessons since I started.  I dont post many scores, so i dont have an established handicap, but you could call it an 18.  I'm looking for a new iron set to replace my '08 big berthas w/ uniflex shafts.  I've demo'd a few clubs and shafts at my local pro shop.  my clubhead speed w/ 6 iron is 91.  i'm light years ahead of where I began as far as my swing and fundamentals go.  However, my lack of experience keeps me a little inconsistent.  I'll shoot low 80's on a good day and high 90's on a bad day.  I swing pretty aggresively towards the ball, here are the clubs i've hit that I like:

ping i15

titleist ap1

mizuno jpx 800

burner 2.0

we tried so many shaft configurations, I cant remember them all, but I seem to remember liking dg s300 and px6.0.  the shaft optimizer suggested dgx100, px6.0 and kbs x.

i played with my big berthas today, a day after I demo'd all the above irons, and i hit everything great.  I'm being told by lots of people its time to upgrade.  I plan on continuing to progress significantly each season.  is a club like the i15 too much for me at my current level?  I'm not to the point where i'm shaping any shots yet.  I currently hit my 7 iron 170 and driver about 275

I know these questions are all subjective, just looking for some opinions/advice.  TIA

You should try a few out and make sure you get the shaft right as you seem to be mixing stiff and extra stiff shafts in your tests.  The clubs you listed are all good clubs and aside from personal preferences you should be able to hit them all well.

The i15's are probably less forgiving and the g15's would be a closer match to the others you listed.  Most people say the Burner 2.0 lofts are jacked, so don't be surprised if you hit them further than the others.  You might also want to try out the Mizuno JPX 800 Pro's and Titleist AP2 if you really like the i15's.

i'm not a fan of the g15/g20 because i dont care for the extra wide sole.  the burner 2.0's have longer shafts than any of the clubs i was hitting.  combine that w/ the lofts, no wonder they're longer.  i didnt want to consider those, but it seemed like I hit those the best.

There's nothing wrong with the Burners, it's just people think they are a lot longer than the competition but it's because of the lofts not the technology of the clubs.  G15's do have a wider sole than i15 so if that's an issue all the more reason to check out the AP2's and JPX 800 Pro's as they both have a thinner sole than their more forgiving cast counterparts.

1.  Can you always put the club head on the ball?

2.  Can you hit a sweeping shot when ever you want?

3.  Can you hit a picking shot whenever you want?

4.  Can you take a divot whenever you want?

5.  Can you do the above with all your clubs from the wedges through the Irons and rescue and woods?

6.  Have you noticed that some of your clubs are easier to hit straight down the fairway?

7.  Have you noticed that some of your clubs are easier to hit straight and a consistent distance?

Look closely at #7.  What kind of shaft flex, shaft length, lies and lofts are in this catagory.  This is the key area to lead you to your new clubs. This info will really help you and the person who is helping to fit you.
