I did this yesterday. 405 yard par 4, nutted the drive out to about 330. Pulled the wedge out and left it 10 yards short of the green :(

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who does this. I do have one thought for all of us though. I was playing Sunday with a scratch golfer who hits the ball just as far as I do but he only played driver on the two par 5s. He told me on the par 4s I'm actually hitting the ball too far. When there is a 380 yard par 4, I'm not going to drive the green so all that hitting a 330 yard drive does is leave me a tough 3/4 swing lob wedge. I tried hitting 5 wood off the tees, to leave myself a full club into the greens and I played one of my best rounds! I guess some times longer isn't better.

Try a bump and run shot instead of a 3/4 lob if the front of the green is clear. The margin of error is pretty high on 3/4 lob especially on tight lies, which is all I seem to have here in Florida right now.

It's not necessarily a pretty shot but it gets the job done. On a the 380 par 4 like the one you mentioned above, I'm now hitting my Cleveland Halo 1i (esp when the course is tree lined) and leaving myself around 150-160 yds. Like you, I'd rather score than be the longest off the tee.

I agree that the bump and run is a great shot. But our course is an old short course with very small elevated greens. Only 2 of the 9 holes have a flat front to the greens. The rest are like upside down cereal bowls, and are only about 20 paces across. Hard to hit but you never have too long of putts.

I know what you mean about having all tight lies. Up here the ground is still frozen 6" down so it's pretty firm!!

    • Day 133: did a stack session.
    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
