Hey Guys,

Just joined this forum this last week because I am absolutely hooked on the game of golf and every time I google something I always end up here.

Anyway, my name is Mike, I am a second year student at Cal Poly in lovely San Luis Obispo, CA. I started playing golf consistently and seriously in June, so for about 4 months now. I played about 3 times a week during the summer and now with school I am down to about once a week. I am establishing my handicap still but currently my handy dandy app tells me I'm at 14.

I have two goals as of now and they are 1: Fix my driver slice, 2: break 80. I am sure with all of your help I can do that soon!

I know I got off to a rough start here with some people, but hopefully you guys will get to know me a little better and accept me.

Looking forward to learning from everyone!

Thanks,

Mike

Great to have you Mike.  You got a lot of information in a short amount of time.  Information that not all golf instructors agree upon.  We are all just learning more.  3 years ago I had no idea the ball started where the face is aimed at impact and thought the best way to hit a draw is to "release" the clubface.  Understand a lot of what was suggested to you wasn't based on opinion but physics and geometry.  So really take the time with the ball flight laws stuff, you'll be ahead of most golfers in no time.

I'm sure you will have that slice fixed in no time and eventually asking about how to fix your over draw!

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
