"Big Break - Ireland" Lost Ball Question

On the show this week during the elimination challenge, "Joe" hit a drive left into the bushes and couldn't find it after 5 minutes of searching.  I thought the rule for a lost ball was to go back to where the ball was last played, in this case, back to the tee.  Instead he was able to drop lateral to the bushes.

Were the bushes OB or marked as a hazzard?  It seemed like he was planning to play the ball if he could have found it.

It was marked as a lateral hazard, there were some red stakes in view as they were searching for it.  BTW - stupid decision to take on Julien in the challenge.  He had just played basically one shot earlier and it was a bad hook took away any chance they had of tying things up.  I know he had some warm-up time in-between, but then he hits the exact same shot in the elimination challenge.
