This is a great question. I am currently teaching my wife how to play and the set-up routine is something that she struggles with. She seems to sset up at the ball in totally different positions each time.

I try to teach her from what I am doing but I just seem to do it automatically and find it diffficult to explain exactly what it is that I do.

I too would appreciate a few pointers in this area.

Thanks

Ill explain my routine and you can see if it works or not. Lately ive been having trouble aiming on approach shots.

Iron Shot

Look behind the ball and pick a spot in the grass that looks odd and that is line with your target, when aiming look consistently at that spot and aim for that instead of looking at the green, it helps because if you keep an eye on that spot it also helps to keep your head down and keep your eye on the ball. The only thing i focus on when making the shot is dragging the club back straight, i imagine an Imaginary line on the backswing and make sure i swing straight through.

Drive

What i do is stand behind the ball and find my line. I then pick a broken tee from the ground and put it about 2-3 feet infront of my ball. This is my aiming point. I do exactly what i do on the fairway, i aim for this spot and it should bring me right in line with my target, And again all i think about is dragging the club back straight. Also on both shots if you have time, put your club down and make sure your toes are touching the shaft, step back a bit and see your line of the club and thats where your aiming, if its off you can fix it easily.

These techniques help alot. I hope you try them and they help you too.

    • Day 133: did a stack session.
    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
