This is one of my favorite events of year. They hold it from July 15th to 17th, but they don't air it on the Golf Channel until... right now (I think they air it live on a different network over the summer)... I dunno, I have some weird fascination with watching celebs play golf.

Some observations:

Dan Quayle uses a broom stick.

Most of these guys are really good.

Playing at elevation looks like a lot of fun (I'm seeing a lot of 170 yard nine irons and PWs).

Hank Haney is walking the course with Charles Barkley. Doesn't seem to be helping much though.

(slightly modified) Stableford scoring looks like a lot of fun.

True - it aired live on ESPN and NBC.

Me too, plus it's a beautiful course and area. The wife and I are thinking of heading up there to spectate next time.

It was pretty hilarious watching Carlton from Fresh Prince do the "Carlton" dance after some of his good shots. And I was pleasantly surprised to see that Ray Allen was a scratch player. He really impressed me.

Joe Sakic had a nice hole in one for a million bucks too.

Yea, Tahoe really is beautiful. You should go to the event. It looks like a lot of fun.

Having been to the event and played the course, I highly reccommend going if you are able. If you get to play, be sure to get a chocolate milk shake at the turn...

Maybe we should remove the "2011" in the thread title and just make this the catch-all for all American Century Classic discussion from now on.

I should be golfed out with Muirfield going, but I got the DVR running, and am looking forward to watching this at some point. NBC Sports is covering it today, followed by NBC on Saturday and Sunday.

Always a fun event.

Always a fun event.

Unfortunately, you can't watch the novelty that is Charles Barkley's swing since he withdrew due to a bum shoulder.

Best Regards,
Ryan

Ahh, that's too bad. Injuries suck. Hope your back is feeling better BTW.

In general though this event is quite the ensemble spectacle. No one guy makes the event for me. However, I don't see Jordan anywhere... he get hurt?

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
