I got a set of new shafts for a on eBay. Bought the set because the price seemed right (< $80 delivered for the 3-PW set). I want to test them in a club before committing to a change. What club should I re-shaft to test these new shafts? Background:

-- It is post-season here in Chicago so all testing will be in a dome off good matts. 83 yards to the back and a 9-iron will hit the top most times.

-- Current irons are JPX 800 Pro 5-GW w/ XP S200 shafts.

-- New/test shafts are PX 5.0 non-flighted. 3-PW. Never used so untrimmed.

-- A professional club maker will do the pulling and install.

What club(s) should I install the new shaft in for the test?

Anything else I should tell/remind the club maker? Frequency tests? Match my current swing weight?

I have the PX 5.0 Flighted-Rifle from a couple of years ago.

You just bought the non-flighted. With the flighted, I'm able to hit the 3i again if I swing smoothly - because flighted gives a little extra lift in longer irons. On the other end, flighted launches the short irons a tad lower.

Rifle non-flighted (your new ones) promise extra lift on launch, and a flattening at high point of trajectory.

PX 5.0 (yours) average 115 grams per shaft, and the XP S300 average 117 grams (TT site doesn't list weight for your current S200).

Check out the OEM sites for details:

It looks like you may have similar shafts, with a little flatter altitude from the new PX 5.0

I would suggest doing the "acid test." Reshaft the 3i and the 9i. Make sure you can get the 3i airborne, and that the 9i doesn't balloon on you. Not sure what to do if you "hit the roof" in the dome.

As for things to consider... Shaft weight: It appears the shafts may be within a couple  of grams of each other. Consider clubhead speed rather than swingweight. If your new grips are heavier or lighter than your JPX ones, this might change clubhead speed.

So I re-shafted my 6-iron with the new PX shaft, matched the swing weight of my other irons, and hit the dome at lunch. Perhaps I am not consistent enough to judge these things. The ball flight may have been a bit lower on average. But my ball flight is not super consistent anyway. Both my 7-iron with XP S300 and the 6-iron with PX 5.0 felt the same. Good hits were good. The 5.0 did not feel loose or too soft.

I'll give it another few dome visits. But I'm wondering if I need to go with my gut since it is unlikely that field observations will prove definitive. I was hoping for more of a "Wow. That feels different." experience.
