A club fitting and a club purchase are two separate, but related, transactions.

First, what type of fitting is it? If you get a high-end dynamic fitting, you would go through analysis for several hours to determine what club model and shaft combinations would work best for you. These can cost $200 on up. Sometimes these fittings are connected to a specific club manufacturer, other time to "academies" or a company like GolfTEC. Some examples:

Then, there's iron or driver fittings, usually with a launch monitor, which may take about 60 to 90 minutes. These start at about $45. If you buy new clubs from Golf Galaxy, for example, this fitting is free.

Then there's a static fitting. The fitter checks the clubs for lie angle - probably using a lie board or impact-tape method - and also for shaft length and grip size. Often this is done if you are buying any set of irons. Sometimes there's a small charge.

Generally, if you buy a new set of clubs from the fitting company or golf shop, you get a discount on the fitting.

If you buy a clubs which are "new" (never been hit or light demo) but no longer in production, you might have to pay for any adjustments needed. So, unless last-generation irons fit you very closely, upgrades would be costly.

If it's still a production model, a new set of those irons with your specs ordered from the factory would not cost you any more than the off-the-shelf price, unless you get exotic upgrades.

You just have to shop around. Different outfits offer different "packages."

Thanks.  I'm looking at buying mizuno mp-59s but I like the old mp-32s a bit more. Looks like I'll settle on 59s due to cost issues.  Hey, if they're good enough for Luke Donald...

Golf galaxy looks like a good place for me.

Thanks again
