i used to constantly try to swing the club from the inside and I kept swinging over the top,(not a severe over the top but one that effected consistency), my arms would take over and get off plane. I recently now try to feel like my arms do nothing in the swing, I swing the club back and on the transition into the downswing i uncoil my hips and shoulders, I try to feel like the uncoiling of the shoulders are what is swinging the club and do nothing with my arms like they are just along for the ride.. NOT SURE IF IT IS RIGHT BUT I HAVE BEEN HITTING IRONS AND ESPECIALLY WOODS DEAD STRAIGHT. ANY TIPS ON THE FEELING OF THE DOWNSWING?

I think you're correct, but I'm not sure 100%. I hear from many to make sure you keep your grip, elbows, and arms completely passive during the swing to allow full extension of the club head on a wide swing arc and to also allow a proper release.

If you're swinging with full extension, rotating correctly, not swaying, and letting the arms go for a ride on the downswing, you should see nice divots after the ball.

What confuses me is this. If the arms are supposed to remain completely passive, how can you move the club back and up in the back swing? Wouldn't the club and arms just dangle down while your body turns back?

I'd like to hear from our fellow low handicappers on this.

Sorry to bring a thread back from a year ago, but I'm also curious about this theory. I have been doing a lot of reading and I think my backswing feels like it's on plane, but the second I have always started my downswing, I always get that outside to in swing path. I read a lot about getting the right arms to drop first on the downswing to hip level, but I tried doing it at the driving range, and I just always hit the ball terrible because I felt a ton of tension.

After reading some more, I think I might just have misinterpreted what people were saying. My idea now is, at the top of the back swing, "bump" or slightly transfer weight to my left foot, and just the slightest bit of weight transfer causes my downswing to happen naturally. I'm curious if this feels like it should or not. I'm not worried about my club speed at this point, but it does feel like I could make consistant contact with the ball almost every time from the inside . If it works I would like to start with that "dead arm" feel and if I can hit the ball straight consistantly I can slowly add power to the swing, and if adding power to the swing messes the swing up then I might be adding power the wrong way.

Hopefully someone might have experienced this feeling or can give me feedback on this feeling.

    • I’m thinking maybe Jason Day read my post. He’s sitting a -3 two off Rory and Burns.
    • Is it only the weekend broadcasts that have a low commercial count?  I feel like it has been a long while since I last watched a Thursday of the Masters, so maybe my recollection is off.  I feel today has a lot more than four minutes per hour of commercials, and far fewer of the fun stories they tell during the Sunday broadcast. 
    • I mean, I do slide my hips like 7 inches towards the target before impact. PGA Tour average is like 3 inches. I’m not Scottie Scheffler who can get away with it. 🤣 He slides a ton.  For me, I have to feel like I basically just turn. Though, I’m probably over exaggerating a bit with that one video because I’m really trying to push off with the left leg which sends the hip backwards. Ideally, I would be able to get my weight over to the outside of my left foot at impact and into the finish. It’s probably OK that I can slide about 7 inches as long as it’s like only three by impact.
    • Day 32 (9 Apr 26) - Grandson is on spring break- puts in to play 9 at our home course.  Used it to work on top of horizon target point for drives and approaches…i.e. pick landing zone (fairway, green) , an intermediate target point and finally what standout feature do I want to hit “over” on the horizon (tall pine, home top, flag pole).    Better l-r dispersion w/5 of 7 drives in the short grass.  Nice little addition to the pre-shot routine. 
    • I managed to get the full afternoon to watch (Pacific time, so the ESPN broadcast began at noon).  I just saw the first shot I feel like commenting on:  Adam Scott's tee shot on #16 was really good, especially after having what might be the worst kind of Maltese Falcon on #15.    I didn't used to like him, but the past few years he's grown on me quite a bit.
