Driver and/or Fairway Wood for a Newbie

Hi,

I have started playing Golf last year in Autumn, I have so far been practicing on a weekly basis and am feeling fairly comfortable with my Irons and Hybrids.

Now I really would like to start practising with a driver, I am not really shure what I should be looking for.

I am currently considering Taylormade RBZ, also I really like the Titleist 910d2 even so as I understand it they are really aimed at low HCers.

Also I am not sure if its worth me getting a 3 Wood, as I have read that many think it has become obsolete, and you are just as well of with a driver/hybrid combo.

Before you ask about my HC - in Germany you have to get a Course License and with that you automatically get assigned an HC of 54. Since it is Winter there are no Tournements witch are HC elegiable, so my HC is going to be stuck at 54 at least until April.

The only way your gonna be able to tell... Is by going out and trying them.. I could list 100 drivers, but you may not like 1 of them...

I wouldnt say that the D2 is aimed at low HCers - it is adjustable and you can make a 10.5 into a 12 degree and close that face up - and then put it back as your swing gets better

I currently game the R11 TP driver, and love it.  And several of my buddies have the stock R11.  And a few have the Titleist 910D2. I've hit the 910D2 and liked it - but felt the TaylorMade was a better fit for me based on my launch numbers.

The TaylorMade RBZ's has received a lot of good press for their fairway wood (3W) and their hybrids... I currently have the 3W on order and the 3H is in my bag.  But outside of the RBZ, the Adams Speedline driver and fairway woods have received great reviews as well.  And the Ping i20 looks like a beautiful club.

Everyone's different and some like the setup, paint, markings, sound, etc... Better on one club than another.  My advice is go to a big box store and hit a lot of different clubs and see what you like. Once you get an idea of what you like... Then go to a club fitter and have him help you dial it in with the proper shaft selection.

But if you are trying to figure out if you should go and purchase a driver, 3W and then a hybrid too... I would say if you have the cash to spend, then yes.  If not - then maybe start with the driver purchase and then add the other clubs later.

I like Callaway drivers, and Adams fairway woods and hybrids.  Everyone has their own personal preference.  Many different manufactures make great clubs that would work.  It's just a matter of finding one that you like the look, feel, and sound of.

Thanks for your replies, I will have a good old go at a couple of drivers and fairway woods when I get the time.

I do like the looks of the 910d2 - so if its not too difficult to hit I would be certainly looking at getting one for those - will let you know when I

get them.

I am not sure what my opinion on carrying a 3 wood is, I got one last year and while I was struggling with my Driver it was pretty nice to have.   I really think it depends on what you are comfortable with, my goal for this season is to get better with my driver because I feel like that will help my game a lot right now.  Hitting your driver to 130-150 instead of your 3 wood to 170-180 is a pretty big difference.  I am a lot better with an 7 or 8 iron then I am with a 5 or 6.

I see a lot of people say that beginners should not bother with the driver but I kind of disagree with that, I think its an important club to get good with.  I would personally just get a driver first then see if you think you will benefit from a 3 wood at all.  I am pretty close to dropping mine out of the bag for another Hybrid.

Well I ended up in a course side store - where I was able to try out a couple of last years mondels.

I ended up getting Taylormade Burner Superfast 2.0 both for driver and a 5 Wood.

Summed up to 220 € - much less then I was planning to spend on the driver alone - I am really happy with it.

Can't see how I would have benefited by splashing out 200/300 more for this years model...
