Started playing golf in May, or at least started taking lessons. I was in the same "which set to buy" dilemma and after talking to many people and a lot of research I bought the Adams Tight Lies 2011 Plus set. The 2011 set has 3h, 4h and 5i thru PW where the 2012 set has 4h, 5h, 6i thru PW so the 2011 has one more club. Couldn't have been happier with my purchase. Doubt you can find a 2011 Plus set but the 2012 Adams Tight Lies Plus is a great buy as well. Look on Ebay as I did and you'll save a ton of money. Also rockbottomgolf.com runs Tight Lies on sale quite often. My teaching pro also confirmed the Adams Tight Lies was a great set of clubs.

I was wondering about the wilson profile high launch set, adams tight lies NM plus, callaway strata plus or putting together a pinemeadow pgx golf set. Which clubs sets are better, more reliable, and game improving? Also, whats th downside to aluminum club heads if i was to go with the wilson profile hl set? Right now im just practicing my swing and accuracy with a ping rapture driver and a 5 iron

I am not a big fan of cheap golf clubs.  The down side of aluminum?  I didn't know there were clubs with aluminum heads, but it is much softer than steel and hitting golf balls is a pretty violent thing, particularly when you throw in the dirt and sand that gets ground in between the ball and club face, heads get a good bit of wear and I would think steel would last a lot longer!

I would rather see a new player look around for a good older set of used game improvement/super game improvement clubs.  I just took a very brief peek at EBay where I found used Ping G10s well under $300.  G5s for under $200.  These are a few years old, but still decent starter clubs.  You get what you pay for.  Good quality used clubs are still good quality clubs, cheapo new clubs will always be cheapo clubs.

If you can make that driver work, grab a similar used 5 wood, a sand wedge and a putter and you are good to go, and you can live without the 5 for a good while.  Some used iron sets will come with the SW, and maybe even a putter.  If the driver isn't working, consider a 4 wood.  Nearly as long off the tee and easier than a 3 off the fairway.

You might also want to take a look at your local Craig's List, and from time to time you'll find full sets of clubs at pawn shops.

No matter what you decide, have fun and save a bit for some lessons!

Whatever you decide, you will need to figure out what shaft stiffness you will need.  The people at Dick's, Golfsmith or whatever should be able to tell you that.

I'm sure it's better to have a custom fitting by a pro, but the online fitting they have there based just on hand size (for grip), height and distance from wrist to floor (for shaft length), and distance you hit a 5 iron (for shaft flex), works pretty well and at least makes sure you aren't badly misfit.  Armed with the results of that, you can browse the "certified pre-owned" section there and find some great bargains, if you are lucky enough to find something you like in your size, handedness, and flex.

Right now i still have the ping rapture driver with regular flex diamana s63 g35t shaft and i can get 280+ on a good solid drive. But its 12* lofted so i tend to slice it or it draw wen im not looking to hit a draw so i was looking to replace it with a tm r11 driver. But anybody familiar with the pinemeadow pgx set? I wanted to try all clubs except the driver unless i could get a heavier shaft. Also what about wilson irons? My loca academy.com has the wilson x-31 431stainless steel irons on sale for $99 and the set includes 4-pw. Are they a decent brand? Because for $30 more i could just get the pinemeadow pgx set and discard or reshaaft the driver. Please help me with some insight

Most newer drivers are made with forged aluminum....the only difference is the plating, which could be titanium, pvd or stainless.
