When to buy new irons?

Ok, I have a question about purchasing new clubs. Right now I have a set of Ping G2s 5-PW, GW, SW, and LW (all G2s). I have had them for just shy of 4 years, which is about as long as I have been playing. So far, I have seen steady improvement since I started playing.

Here is my question, I have been itching for new irons and wedges. I can't really think of any good reason to pitch the idea to the wife, or any good reason to actually buy new clubs other then just cause. Should I just save the money or do you think I would actually see a real benefit? If not now, when should I think about new clubs? I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks in advance.

My home course isn't that difficult (from what I can tell). I was pretty consistent 86-88 last year, with one or two holes that are out of control scores. I didn't play much worse when playing longer courses. Course stats:

Be it woods OR irons I found the best way to tell was by "sharing" clubs with different friends I play with. During the course of a round it gives me the opprtunity to hit different clubs in a "real world" scenario. Then...if you find something that is "magic"...then go buy 'em!

Give your local pro a visit.

Most amateur golfers play with "off the shelf" clubs that don't actually fit there height and build etc. Pro will be able to advise on whether your clubs shoul be lengthened/shortened, loft angle increased/decreased etc.

It's the only way to be certain.

and as the old adage goes..if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Have you ever put new grips on your G2s? The reason I ask is you have an excellent set of clubs right now!! I personally play the i3 blades, they're about a year older than the G2s, and I love them. I've re-gripped them several times(at least once per year) and they play like they did when I bought them. If they get beat up from rocks and wear and tear then I'll replace them, but until the technology improves they are great for me.

I had them re-gripped at the beginning of this year. I doubt I will end up replacing them now. I think I have been reading too many golf magazines.

Do you need a new set of irons? No, you don't. Would you see any benefit from new equipment? Perhaps. If the clubs you have now are not properly fitted for you then you would see a big difference. Sometimes a new set of sticks can just give a player confidence but the equipment you have now is good. While driver technology has advanceed dramatically in 4 years, iron technology hasn't changed nearly as much as club manufacturers like to think. My irons are approx 5 years old and while I have considered a change as well, I see no reason to rush into it. Now, getting a new set of clubs can be "fun" and that's why we play the sport. So if you want a new set then by all means go ahead and make up a reason to tell the wife But as long as your G2's are fitted for you (maybe take those to a local pro and make sure they are fitted) then I think you have a nice set of irons. Oh yeah... the reason I started to think about making a change? I subscribed to Golf Digest and was reading their hot list....

You have a great set of irons, I read lots of mags. too and it's hard not to get caught up in all the hype of the new stuff, but I think the irons you and I play are as good as it gets. Maybe in a couple more years I will be able to justify a new set. Good luck and hitem straight.

Thanks for all of the advice. I went through the Ping fitting when I bought them. My swing has probably changed since then, due to some lessons. I know my scores have gotten better! I am going to see if I need some adjustments, but otherwise I think they are in the bag for a few more years.

I have decided to look at some different wedges. We will see how that goes.

      I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
