I am very new to the game of golf and I am wanting to buy a set of clubs, I have read good things about the Top Flight XL set for beginners.  I know Top Flite owned by Callaway Golf would anyone happen to know what irons the Top Flites would be in the Callaway line up, I am sure they are copys of a iron in there current or previous years line up.  Thanks for any help anyone can provide.  Happy Easter to all!

Although owned by Callaway, TopFlite is a separate product line of golf clubs. Most of the TopFlite clubs come in boxed sets like the XL: a mix of woods, hybrids, irons wedges, putter - and a bag.

TopFlite produces durable, basic, user-friendly clubs. They are a great way to get started - one challenge for beginning golfers is figuring what they need. The boxed set solves this.

Also, make sure you take a few lessons. Learning the basics makes all the difference when you get started. You might consider some spring golf clinics - group lessons a couple of nights a week for beginners. You don't have to feel embarrassed because everyone is just starting out.

If you're considering a boxed set, hit the clubs first and get a basic static fitting. The club fitter can check the shaft length and lie to make sure they fit your height and arm length. Most men from about 5-8 to 6-2 in height can use "standard' clubs.

If you're interested, here's a guest column I wrote in the past on boxed sets:

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Greg - I guess it all depends on your budget.  I you have a little more money to spend, you can buy a better product.  But I'm always a fan of saving money!  You should be able to find a solid used set of clubs on ebay or craigslist.  I'm a big fan of the Adams game improvement sets for beginners (they should probably start paying me since I talk about them so much haha).  The Adams A7 are an old product line, but you can still find them around and they are great beginners set.

Another thing to consider other than just brand, is set up... i.e. shaft flex, shaft length, lie.  I would think for most beginners regular flex, standard length, and standard lie would be fine, but of course not in every circumstance (e.g. if you are 6'5" you may need longer shafts).

Most importantly when just starting out, I agree with WUTiger... take lessons.  I could of saved myself a lot of trouble (literally, I was in trouble all day on the course when I first started out) by taking a series of lessons and learning solid fundamentals from the start.  If you wait until later on, you'll likely have to learn to break bad habits, which is much tougher than learning from scratch.

Good luck!

I started out on the Top-Flite XL set and I think that they are great clubs for the money.

I know the two golf courses that I play at have a deal for $300 which includes the Top Flite XL set, Foot Joy shoes, glove, box of balls, bag of tees, and 2 free lessons. I think that you may want to see if a local course near you has a similar deal.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
