Hello,

I am normally used to feeling out a forum for quite a long time before I make my first post, let alone my first thread, but I just recently acquired a new problem in my swing, and I am looking to correct it as soon as is possible.

Background:

I was using a Taylormade R9 driver for nearly two years without any problem.  I had a decent slice in my swing before switching to this club, and I finally had it all worked out as to where I could hit my drives where I wanted them to go with a pretty good amount of control.  Mind you, I am a high handicap golfer, though I am not a beginner, and I understand a lot about my golf swing itself.

I am a right handed golfer, and I used to have a pretty severe slice to my driver, but I corrected that through a lot of work with videos and whatnot (no lessons at all).  However, my driver shaft broke directly in half while I was teeing off on a hole, and I decided to buy a new driver because I couldn't find someone to reshaft the R9 for a price which would make sense of doing that as opposed to buying a new driver completely.  So, I hit a couple dozen balls with a Taylormade Burner 10.5 on the golf shops' machine, and I really liked the feel of the club while still getting the same amount of clubhead speed (98mph) as I did with the R9.  I bought the new driver, and have had problems with it ever since.  It has been about a month.

I am noticing that at the moment I contact the ball with this driver, my right hand slips around and under the club, and that causes the clubface to be very open, which of course also causes the ball to slice quite severely.  The best I can describe the feeling is that it is as if the grip has butter around where my right hand would be, and it just completely slips around at impact to the point where my palm is pointing straight up into the sky.  I have never done this with any club whatsoever, even when I made my very first shots a few years back.

I make the same swing as I did with the R9 with the same power, and the only thing I can think of which would be different is the rubber grip itself.  So....

Should I replace the grip with something which has more traction?   Should I wear two gloves on my drives to increase hand grip?  Could something possibly be different with my hand grip from the R9 to the Burner?  Before getting this club, my driving was the saving grace of my game, and with this new club, I have no idea where to go.   Help?

Thank you immensely for any suggestions you are able to give!

The impact between golf club and golf ball lasts a very short amount of time, not long enough for your hand to move on the club during impact.

You're probably hitting the ball out of the toe of the club. That would cause the face to open after impact, which might explain what you're feeling. I'm not sure if toe hits could cause you to slice the ball, I think with a square face and club path a toe hit should still go pretty straight, so your slice might be something else that's gone wrong in your setup or swing. But you can confirm the toe hits by putting some tape on the face of your driver to see where the marks are.

I had a similar situation on my driver, but it was at the top of the backswing. I put a lamkin oversized grip on it and no more slipping. I probably would have got away with a medium sized grip, but didn't want to re-grip it twice. The stock nike one was just too thin.
