Need Help, Getting a New Driver

Ok so I'm buying a new driver... Titleist 905r from 2006 it is only $200 now. I'm buying it from TGW.com and I was wondering if I should 9.5 degrees or 10.5 degrees... right now I have a 10 degree driver and I hit it pretty high. Also, I was wondering if I should get the Titleist Speeder by Fujikura or the NV 65 by Aldila. I have a swing speed of about 110 mph and I hit the ball pretty far. What do you think?

Just off hand, since you swing pretty fast, I'd go with less loft, since you shouldn't have a problem getting the ball up in the air. As to the shaft, I'm not sure...best bet is to demo them both on the launch monitor and see what happens.

I think you should visit a demo day and get fit properly rather than waste any money on a driver that has NOT been fit for you.

No offense, but you wouldn't be asking both what degree AND what shaft to get if you had properly been fitted.

I agree....definately get checked out before you buy. I bought a new "Burner" on Saturday and was fortunate that I got to demo it at a driving range near here that is actually a large lake. They use "floating" balls and you hit to island greens.

I was hitting a 9.5 Sumo regular shaft...and hitting it well. I played a week ago with a friend who had just bought a 10.5 regular shaft Burner and was crushing the ball straight as an arrow. Even though I was hitting the ball LONG, it just seemed like the ball flight was way too high.....

Boy was I wrong!!! At the "lake" I hit a 9.5 and a 10.5 side by side and there is NO DOUBT I was hitting the 10.5 longer since I could see the ball "plop" in the water.

I'm just wondering if a lot of people (like myself) make the mistake of THINKING they are hitting the ball too high, when it fact it is actually the "optimim launch angle" they should be at?

I think your right I think I'm going to go with the 10.5 because I have a 10 now thats the reason why I was unsure if I should go 9.5 or 10.5 and I will get the aldila nv-65 because it is light and the Burner shaft is only 50 grams... light= speed= distance and I won't have to overswing for good speed.

Plus iacas some people don't all have the privelage of being able to go to a pro at a country club to get fitted. I am only 15 and play at a local public course and all the pros are really rude.

It's not about privilege, and this is not a veiled attempt at being snobby. Pros aren't just at country clubs, and if you're 15 it's especially important that you get fit so that you don't develop bad habits. Regular old Golf Galaxy or Golfsmiths or Edwin Watts stores will fit you AND sell you a driver, after all.

I was hitting a 9.5 on my old driver, right before I bought my new one I was probably going to go with the same. However, I read that article in golf digest that talked about loft. It was pretty convincing. Its main point was, "Go to you bag, take the cover off of your driver. If it says below 10 degrees, and you are not a PGA professional, try more loft." It had several test with different swing speeds 75-105 (maybe more, can't remember) and had those swings with different lofts and almost every test had the ball going further with a higher lofted driver. My swing speed (~95), it had 11 degrees as the optimum loft for the driver, so I went with the 10.5. I do hit it high, and it doesn't get alot of roll...but it does go a long way!

Thanks for this reminder. My ego won't stay out of the way on this one unless I remind myself constantly. I'm in the midst of a complete bag makeover (including the bag) and the driver is the last part. I'm getting fitted on Friday and need to remember how important loft is.
