Have decided to determine my handicap this summer and am trying to use the GHIN service at twincitiesgolf.com to do it.

The service is requiring me to enter an ESC score and I don't know what that is or how to determine it.

Here is the less than helpful Q & A the site gives as an explanation for determining my ESC score:

What is ESC?
A. All scores for handicap purposes, including tournament scores, are subject to the application of Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). This mandatory procedure reduces high hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player's potential ability. A handicap determined from scores to which ESC has not been applied may not be termed a Handicap Index.

Course Handicap
Maximum Number
9 or less
Double Bogey
10-19
7
20-29
8
30-39
9
40 and above
10

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

the simple answer is that ESC is used so that handicaps can't artificially be inflated for sandbagging purposes and how its applied is pretty simple.  For the honest people..it just throws out that blow up hole or three that doesn't really reflect how you can play.

You figure out your course handicap and then go from there.  If its 9 or less, you can score no worse than Double on any hole...5 on a par 3, 6 on 4 and 7 on 5.

Without first having an established handicap..you have to use the mens max of 36.4 to determine your course handicap.

IN order to use it...record your original score on each hole..and then you'll make adjustments after the fact to determine the adjusted gross score that will be used for the handicap system.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Thanks for the helpful reply.

Not having an established handicap (and no explanation of what to do) had me stumped on the course handicap calculation.  Also based on the description given for the score entry I wasn't 100% sure that the score to be entered was an adjusted gross score.
