He hacked his way to the fourth hole, where he nearly killed me with an errant shot. I was just forward of his position and well off the fairway where he was, and his ball went

I almost did that to a friend about 3 weeks ago. Me and one friend were at the tee box. I was teeing off and the other kid was grabbing a ball from the golf carts. I severely heeled my ball and hit it almost straight behind me. The ball went just over his head by about 6 inches.

Now, none of my friends ever stand anywhere in front of one of my shots.

I once sliced the ball so bad it went through the golf cart next to the tee box and almost hit my father in the head. When anyone plays with me they stand way back. This is why I play for fun only!

Playing with a 19 year old kid who insisted on "packing a bowl" after every hole we played and asking me to smoke with him everytime even though i told him NO everytime.....

he still managed to shoot a 79 on a par 72....maybe i should start smoking weed while i play

Join my club. I've had more than my share of wild mishits. I've sliced three fairways over, I've hit the guy in front of me (who I thought was well out of range - 250 yards with a 3 iron), I've had shots bean the sign that tells you how long the hole is (twice in a row - the ball came back at me).

Whenever I golf with my buddies and I'm attempting a low-percentage recovery shot from the trees (punching it out with my 3 iron rather than chipping it sideways back to the fairway), they all have a penchant for hiding behind the golf cart, because my ball could go anywhere. (I've had up to 10 shots out of the trees in a round at times).

I've had most the normal experiences being paired with all types of players. 99.9% of all players I've ever been paired with have all mostly been friendly and tolerable at worst. I can only remember two bad playing partners and both were in tournaments.

The first was at the 1983 Michigan Boy's State Championship. For most teenagers it's the first really big golf stage and there is a lot of pressure. Anyways I was a senior that year and had been in that situation the year before so I was nervous but managed to keep it halfway together and play decent. Well one of the guy's in our group just couldn't handle the pressure I guess because he started to lose it. He started the day with a beautiful tee shot on the first hole that shanked into the right rough about 50 yards off the tee and it got worse from there. So his frustration mounted and by the fourth hole he was grumbling after every shot and swearing and yelling at himself. We got about halfway down the fairway of the fourth hole and he's yelling at himself, I stop turn around and tell him to shut up and quit whining, there's other players here trying to concentrate. He kind of looked at me suprised at what I said. I really think he was so freaked out that he really didn't realize what he was doing. Our scorer who was walking with us came up to me and said I'm glad somebody finally said something to him because I was going to throw him off the course. The kid kept his mouth shut the rest of the round.

The other was in 1988 at a tournament at Ft. Lewis. I was paired with a 17 year old and his dad was with him as his caddie. This kid really thought he was the next coming of Nicklaus and had a very arrogant attitude on the first tee. We tee off on the first hole which was to a blind landing area. We walk up the hill and see two balls in the fairway and one is 20 yards ahead of the other. The kid goes directly to the farthest ball, looks down in disgust that it wasn't his and gives me some snide comment that I got lucky as he walks back to his puny tee shot. Well at that point I decide that come hell or high water, I'm going to bury this wise arse on the course. So we spent a fun filled day of me out driving and out scoring him. I didn't win the tournament but I sure did feel a lot of satisfaction smoking this cocky brat by 8 shots!

That's about it for bad/weird playing partners for me. Two bad apples aint bad in 33 years of playing!

theres a guy ive been paired with a few times in our socitey, now i must stress he cant be classed as wierd, he is a charmingly friendly old fella but the thing is his eyesight is really, really bad.

during a round i have to mark his card and mine.he cant see where the scores should go.

i have to tell him details on each hole,eg, par, distance, fairway shape and hazards.

i have to stand on the fairway 15ft in front of the tee to give him a line then move when he has got it.

the thing is when it comes to putting the guy is a demon, 5ft'ers 25 ft'ers ive seen him nail them all.

it can be hard work but when you see the enjoyment this guy gets from being out with the rest of us it makes me happy.

Another time I got paired up with a couple of good ol' boys who were smearing their drivers with chapstick. Apparently it lessens spin and therefore slices. Cheating, certainly.

Yer i played with a guy once who covered his ball in chapstick. He reckoned that it made the ball slide along the ground hence making the ball go further, but i dunno how much more distance it gave him he topped pretty much every tee shot.

I feel for you bros, I guess we all have atleast one weird partner in our golf life. Mine happened awhile back. Played a round of golf while I was in vegas and I got paired with this dude who was like a walking radio (on a very bad channel) . The guy I think started talking with the first hi and hello and never stoped talking till we finished our round. Man o man I was going to walk the last 12 holes just to get away from him , I even purposely aiming my shots opposite to where his ball lands just to give myself a break. And this guy even has this bad habbit of approaching the 4 some ahead of us to to appologize that his drives almost hits them but I tell you his drives were atleast good 80 yards short of the people infront of us. I dont know whats the deal with that dude I did'nt ask because he might tell me the story of his whole life. Yikes!

I might give that a shot - I can drive the ball about 170 yards with one arm, so I might try putting. Maybe it'll put an end to my four putting.

Played with a older guy yesterday - nothing bad about him - but he barely could walk so he drove to every ball as close as possible. On the 9th he ends up a couple of centimeteres before a water hazard - and decides to play it out - downhill. Shot was good - what wasnt so cool was that he lost his balance and fell head over into the muddy water. He couldn´t get out by himself obviosly so we all tried to pull him out of the mud (that guy was heavy) - didnt thought that i had to work so hard during a round, but at least i had something to smile about in a shitty round.

On another occasion i played with a guy who was so obsessed to play "the ball as it lies" and always forward never back or sideways that it took him an enourmous amount of shots every hole to finish (he played horrible). On a Par 4 with his 5th or 6th shot he lies beside a stone and guess what - he decides to hit it in the direction of the pin like 150m away no chance to reach it anyway. So he tooks out one of his brand new irons and the next thing i see is a cloud of sand, a ball and an iron head all heading the same way (the head further than the ball of course).
I didnt wanted to say a anything that moment, but obviously he should have taken his 5wood instead of an iron to get more distance out of his shot...

I often go to my (busy) course as a single. Most players I've been paired with have been extremely cool.

I don't begrudge advice at all, since I'm learning how to play (though I can't stand vague, pompous tips like, "you should learn the physics of the game, that will help you").

So this one hot afternoon, my new partner (as ordered by the curmudgeonly starter), rolled up in his cart (dammit I like to walk) dressed to the nines. Shiny shirt, snazzy shoes, gleaming clubs...wow, I thought, this guy must rule the course.

After he hooked his drive into the woods, I meekly sliced my first drive, got in the cart, and...B.O. Overpowering. Unreal.

Still, this wasn't the worst offense to general golf etiquette (there must be guidelines about overwhelming body odor, right?).

No, see, Stinky thought he was a tour pro. He vandalized a usually brisk front 9 with a pre-shot routine that might justify murder with the "pick up the pace" petition signers.

6 or 7 practice swings on the tee was brisk. Personally I enjoyed the 30 to 60 second address (shaking the driver back and forth included). That was a lot of fun with a foursome waiting (and easily keeping pace).

Also great were the crouched surveys on approach shots, including measuring for wind (and requisite practice swings).

Best were multiple angle looks at the green's surface.

He also completely fabricated his score. He sucked just as much as I sucked.

    • Day 2:  I hit a bucket of balls this morning.  Not gonna lie, almost didn’t go since it was my first time going alone and it was a little intimidating.  I mostly hit with my driver (the last bit of balls was with my 7 iron).  The sun was in my face but I think the ones that had good contact with went the furthest yet (maybe 150 yards then a good roll?).  Once I switched to my 7, the first half of my balls were crap.  I’ve always hit my irons before my driver when practicing and done fine - does this make any difference or is it just because I’m so green?
    • It's likely per "category" of clubs, so irons would be one category, wedges would be a category, driver a category, fairway woods/hybrid a category, etc. They aren't going to charge you $50 per iron for a fitting. Almost all iron fittings are done with like a 6 or 7 iron, fitters don't carry full sets of every iron. So yes, if you use a 7 iron for the fitting and let's say you get fit into the P790 with a certain shaft, 1 degree flat and .5" longer than normal you would just order the full set of P790s with that shaft/lie angle/length combination and you'll be perfectly fine.
    • I think the $50 fitting price tag is per club. The clubs I am most interested in getting fitted for are irons. And I'd rather not spend a bunch on getting fitted for multiple irons. Would I be fairly safe to assume that choosing something like a 6 or 7 iron for fitting would likely relate to other lofts in the same configuration/make/model?
    • A Mevo is 500. Comes with little decals to hit balls inside too.
