Should the hip slide towards the target start before the top of the backswing?

I have a decent amount of hip slide but it starts at the same time as my downswing i.e. I get to the top of my backswing, pause, then simulataneously slide my hips to the left whilst bringing the club down.

Is this contributing to my poor lag / casting motion on the downswing?

In some it starts early. In some it starts at the same time.

There's no one way for this or one right answer, though longer hitters tend to be in the first group. Whether that's what makes them long or the other way around I don't know for sure.

Most of the time sure, but you've also got guys who start everything down at the same time. Hunter Mahan springs to mind.

I'm finding it difficult to achieve as much hip slide as I would like.  Hogan seems to slide 6-8 inches, or more.  I had someone look at my swing and told me that my left hip was sliding about 3 inches.  I'm trying to do it at the top of my backswing.  I think that I'm not assisting the slide with enough leg movement.  Maybe a wider stance would help.  Hogan's stance is somewhat wider than mine.  Or, perhaps it would be easier if I slide forward as I swing down.

To really see how much hip slide Hogan had (not as much as you think)

Too wide and it inhibits the forward slide (because your trail leg can't get any longer).

Good demonstration.  But, you have to ignore the red markers, which are mismatched between the two from the beginning, and look at the grid behind the players.  From there, Hogan's hip slide seems to be as much as, if not more than, Snead's.  His stance is noticably wider, too.

Yeah, Hogan slid his hips quite a bit. 4-5" is quite a bit. Sometimes he slid them more.
