At the course I usually play this year, they've grown some thicker rough around the greens. That's put me in some spots where I don't have much green to work with and I need to get the ball up in the air and drop softly. If the ball is sitting down some though, it's harder to play a flop and I've never been able to flop the ball with enough consistency to feel confident with it.

But a couple months ago I began playing around with severely choking up on the lob wedge. I'll grip it all the way down below the grip, I'll have m hands down on the metal shaft and it's working really well. I find it a lot easier to make a good accelerating swing that gets through the grass and catches the ball cleanly. Playing with a couple of people yesterday, they saw me doing that and getting good results, and I said, yeah, I just started playing around with it and find it to be a good easy way to get a good result from the rough around the greens.

Is there anyone else who ever chokes up a club like this?

I've also found it really useful on 30 to 40 yard shots from off the green. I just make about 3/4 swing with the lob wedge and I've found it's worked really well with bare-patch lies.

I've been having a lot of problems lately, with bare lies, and chipping to the green from 10-20 yards.

Thanks for the tip, I will try this method next time I go to the range.

Do you cock your wrists? Or use a putting type swing?

Not sure what type of grass you play on but we have bermuda here in savamnah. I usually will geip the club a little firmer and open it up. The ball tends to pop up and land like a butterfly with soar feet. But with this grass you never know if it will come out clean or come out like a sand shot.. alot depends on what type of grass and other specifics. I've never gripped down to the shaft unless the ball is way above my feet.

No such thing as having too many scoring shots in your bag. I practice that stuff more than anything else.

Results are all that matter. Having said that it would seem if you are having that much trouble with these shots that this may be nothing but a band-aid fix. I'm not saying don't do it, but I just feel that it might be an indication of something wrong with your equipment in general.

Are your shafts the right lengths for you? Flex? Lie Angle? What about bounce on your wedges? Even the grips might need to be addressed.

If you can't get enough acceleration holding the club normally then you will end up having difficulty in other areas and by adopting the fix you have found as permanent or expanding it to other shots may lead to slower overall growth of your game.

Again, not saying right or wrong, but maybe view it as temporary and work it out with equipment checks and practice.

To each his own though. Good Luck!
