I have been golfing for 2-3 years now.  When I first started, I was using some 20 year old no-name clubs I had and used a few times back in high school.  When I decided I wanted to get serious about learning golf, I bought some Ping I-5's.  My instructor recommended G-15's but I was too stuborn to listen to him.  I had bought into the idea that game improvement clubs hindered your ability to learn to swing correctly.  This is a popular notion on the internet.

However, as my swing got better and, perhaps more importantly, my understanding of the swing got better, I started to question this decision a bit.  Not too much because I did hit my I-5's pretty decently and they are supposed to be somewhat game improvement clubs.  But I recently played on a par 3 course and borrowed my wife's Callaway Big Bertha irons.  Holy cow, man, these are easy clubs to hit.  I hit my I-5's, especially the 5i-PW, pretty straight but I instantly hit every shot higher and farther with the Big Bertha's.

I hopped on-line and ordered myself a set and have been practicing with them a lot.  Why did I wait so long to do this?  These clubs are so easy to hit and perform so well that I have completely changed my mind about SGI clubs.  I practice everyday and continue to do so.  I don't think these clubs will hurt my progress one bit.  The feel is not the same as my I-5's but I can totally tell when I flushed it and when I didn't.  They have these huge wide soles to save you in case you hit it fat . .but they don't encourage you to hit it fat or hide from you the fact that you hit it fat.

I remember once there was a thread on here about what you would tell yourself if you could go back in time.  I would tell myself to get some Super Game Improvement clubs right away.  And lessons.

And done.  I've outgrown my Big Bertha SGI irons.  I've been practicing steadily and getting better and better . .and now I have to open the club face significantly or else hit everything far left.

I still think it was worth it to get these clubs.  I should've gotten them 2 years ago.  They didn't enforce bad habits, they actually helped me improve my swing.  They gave me a lot of confidence but I could always tell when I was "getting away with one".

Now I have to find something else because I'd still like the forgiveness but I don't really like having to open the club face.
