Okay so given that today was my off day, i sat at home and watched a lot of the US open, and one thing that I noticed that I hadn't really noted before was how much faster the backswing of the pro's was than anything i had been taught or seen before. I've always heard a slow backswing is key, and most duffers i see on the course play that way. Well, I took my clubs out to the range and experimented with a quicker backswing, and I swear that it improved my shots. I was slicing less shots with my irons, and getting better contact. I was absolutely crushing my drives, still ironing the slice out of it but it seems to be getting better and i've got it down to a slight fade now. It was almost like with less time for the club to be hanging in the air behind me gave me less time to screw it up.

So how about you guys, have you found that quickening your backswing has helped you? Or am I just a freak?

i noticed it lets me get more/longer lag for better power but i lose any consistency. i also dont end up turning enough when i do that

I lose my balance when I swing too slow, which leads to sprayed shots.

If I swing too fast, I'll probably top the ball.

DM4UGA I would recommend you to read Tour Tempo by John Novosel, and you can thank me later... simply put, there is only one swinging tempo that would give you optimal yardage without sacrificing accuracy... and that swinging tempo is shared by all great golfers: they may have different swings, but their TEMPO are ALL THE SAME.

read the book once, learn the concept, and the game will never be the same once you get the correct tempo. trust me.

Well he's right on the tempo thing, its all about consistency throughout the swing, so if you are taking a slow backswing your follow through should probably be slower to complement that. Vice versa with the faster swings, in either case its all experiment find what works for you and stick to it.

As stated TEMPO TEMPO TEMPO. One thing I have seen folks do is get a little fast on their backswing and start to decellerate on their down swing. This is the kiss of death. Just make sure you don't take it back too fast that you feel like you have to slow down at the top..

It's all in the tempo, each of us has a different tempo and you need to find yours. If your swing makes you lose your balance or spray your shots the tempo is wrong for you. usually if someone says to slow your backswing we slow it down to much and still have problems hitting the ball. the best advise is take a good practice swing staying in control and then step up to the ball and make the same swing. How many times have you been told to hit it with your practice swing?
