I have been struggling to get distance with long irons and woods for some time, I am sure now that the problem is casting and need some advice as to what drills work best.

I get around 250 yards carry with my driver and this is not enough for the level I want to play at...

How much extra distance should I get if I start creating good lag in the swing? I mean, will this be the thing which gives me great distance at last?

I have been struggling for so long and it spoils my game when I see long lads of 16 drive it past me, this area of my game really needs improving and like I said, I am sure that the angle between my arms and club is half of what it should be..

So I am guna focus on this part of my game 100% now from here on, and any advice from people on here would be much appreciated

If you swing correctly with a body powered swing (body and hands), then the maximum lag will be there.  You will not have to think about it.  If you swing with your arms and hands, I would not know how to help you with that.

My Two Cents

I don’t believe low handicappers who say that lag is something that just ‘happens’ and that you don’t have to think about it.

They might think it just ‘happens’, but that’s like saying walking ‘just happens’ because we can do it without thinking about lifting our legs and placing them back on the ground.

The technique for retaining lag is ingrained in a pro golfers swing. At some point they learnt how to do it and now it ‘just happens automatically.

So what is the technique? I wish I knew! I’ve been reading every blog going and there are multiple theories.

I suspect that pro golfers are simply (and unconsciously) holding the wrist angle for longer, whereas poorer golfer are simply (and unconsciously) throwing the club far too early at the ball.

The best piece of advice I’ve had regarding lag is to start the downswing with a lateral hip slide whilst doing nothing with the hands or arms.

They will automatically drop down into a good position with your hands just above the hip. The angle will still be close to 90 degrees and from there all you have to focus on is hitting down on the ball with a forward leaning shaft. This alone won’t give you lag like Tiger Woods but will certainly stop you casting.

If you try and start the downswing with your hands you will invariably throw the club and lose the angle immediately.

I would focus less on lag and more on getting the low point of the swing forward and hitting it consistently. I think if you do this, you'll get lag. You want lag because you want to hit it farther and more consistently right? Hit the proper low point all the time.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

    • Has Scottie been losing his footing on shots today or is this something he does regularly?
    • How many times does Cameron Young get his big misses to kick out into the fairway this week? Burns at #2:  his second was a penalty (unplayable), punched out, missed his fourth long.   (I asked earlier and now I know, so I'm posting in case anyone else had the question)
    • I was watching a Tiger highlight reel earlier today;  all his eagles at the Masters (all were at par-5s, except one at #14). That and this got me to thinking, what would a Sergio Garcia career highlight reel consist of?  Destroyed tee boxes, damaged tee markers, yelling at rules officials, and spitting in at least one cup. I didn't see Sam Burns's second through fourth shots at #2.  How did he end up off the green for his fifth?
    • Would he be the first winner of the Masters to be banned from Augusta!  Also, come on Sergio, you are a 46 year old over the hill golfer. Go get your Saudi paycheck and chill. You are not that good anymore to get that upset. Go enjoy your "retirement" in LIV.
    • I think this is what you are talking about him doing? Close enough? It could have changed a bit, or maybe he added an extra piece to it, so it might not look exactly the same as this.  Note, this is from 5 years ago, so it is something is just has to always do.
