Hello all,

I have been playing just over 2 months now and have improved quite a bit since my first time out.  Ball striking is somewhat consistent and my over all game is probably about where I should be with as much time as I've been playing...

The #1 problem I feel I have is mentally being unsure of my shots.  I align myself and set up with confidence; ready to hit the ball where it needs to be hit.  However, as soon as I start my backswing I start to doubt myself.  It seems like in a matter of a split second I go from being confident to being worried that I am going to hit a bad shot.  And sure enough when this happens I generally do hit a bad shot.

Any suggestions on this or just comes with time as I play more consistently?

Time and repetition is really the only cure. If you find something else let me know :)

What has worked for me is an absolute singular focus. At address, I take care of all the pre-shot checks, grip alignent, posture etc. Once I am comfortable I look down at the ball. At this point nothing else enters my mind, just watch the club hit the ball. The same with putting. If I make a bad shot, I'll deal with that when/if I find the ball.

You need to fix your mind on the reality that you WILL hit bad shots.  Even the pros hit a few bad shots every round.  You need to trust your swing, let it fly and accept the results.  Worry and self doubt is only going to cause tension in your swing, which is going to cause you to hit more bad shots.

Let me recommend some books:

Golf is Not a Game of Perfect

Your 15th Club

The Unstopable Golfer

all three are by Dr. Bob Rotella

I cannot how much these three books have changed my game mentally.  I practice what is in the books are have seen my game improve greatly not only on the skill side but attitude wise as well.

while this is true, I think it is good to try to have one, non-negative thought in your head during the swing.  i.e. head steady or smooth transition at the top.  Sure you will hit bad shots and you are going to have to accept that, but with one positive thought in your head, it should help your mind from wondering into the negative outcome areana.

    • that is an excellent approach. I did that with my last set. I made a few 7 irons from different heads and shafts. Getting a feel for how they play on the course is the right idea. Let us know how it goes.
    • I’m glad the USGA booted some of the hecklers. It’s getting out of hand. I wish the networks wouldn’t mic the crowd to give those idiots a platform.
    • New member here, and I have decided to upgrade my clubs. I have been playing for a long time but these last 10 years I have had to put four kids through college. So I've played a few rounds a year and some years have not played at all. I am currently playing Titleist 716 AP2's with Rifle 6.5 steel shafts and Winn grips. I used to hit my 7 iron around 165 yds until just 5 years ago. I turned 62 this year and noticed I can barely get my 7 iron to 145 yds. I went for a fitting to try out some new player distance irons. I don't think I need game improvement irons because I'm pretty straight and rarely try to work a ball (if I'm working a ball, then I most definetely did something wrong to get there). I tried a bunch of irons (Callaway, Mizuno, PXG, Taylormade, Srixon, Ping, and Titleist) and I kept coming back to the Ping and Titleist. They just felt right and really looked good when lining up a shot. The Ping, by far, went the longest of all the irons. The Titleist was a close second in distance. Both felt buttery smooth through impact. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with these irons. I was getting 160 yds with a nice smooth swing (81 mph swing speed). I know I'm asking a lot of my clubs but my last fitting was 27 years ago and I ended up with some Cleveland TA3's or TA2's forged irons with Dynamic Gold S300 (swing speed 87 mph). I really love the feel of my AP2's and the place I'm going to purchase from is going to make a 7 iron in both Ping and Titleist for me to test on real grass. I'm pretty certain it's going to be either one. They're both identical in price for a set of 5-PW. I'm going to forego a 4 iron and get another 4 hybrid to go along with my 3 hybrid. Any and all replies are welcome.
    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
