Hey guys, new to the forums here, and to the game as well Recently found an interest in golf once I went with a family member, and have been going to the driving range 4-5 times a week ever since.

I'm definitely new, but will be getting a lot of experience in the next two weeks (playing 5-6 rounds) so after that, I'm definitely going to need my own set of clubs. The ones I have currently are some no names that have rust forming along the shaft lol, so I definitely need an upgrade.

If anyone could recommend some good affordable beginner clubs, that would be awesome. Maximum budget for this is $250, so I know it's not too much to work with, but there definitely has to be some quality stuff under that price.

Thanks for any help guys!

Do you have a Dicks Sporting Goods near you? They have some good sets there, for solid prices.

If you raise that price to $299 you can get some solid brands. If not.. you can go with some Adams and a few have Maxfli's that are a decent set. PW-6, 5,4,3 Fairway Woods.

Even a Maxfli Revolution set + driver + golf bag.

Saw a set of Top Flite clubs on Dick's website for 299$, is that a decent/reputable brand? Lots of good reviews too which is always a plus.

domp, I'm in the same boat as you. Just today, I went to Dick's in their hitting room and hit a few different clubs. They had an Adams set for $199, a Callaway set for $299, and an Adams A5os set for $299. They all hit just fine with one major difference: The Adams A5os comes with hybrids, the other sets do not. Since most people are not going to hit 2-4 irons, why buy a set where you're not using 3 clubs already? you WILL use the hybrids! I'm going back later this week to drop the money on the Adams a5 set and give them a whirl this weekend. Believe me, the cheaper adams set and the callaway set were real nice, especially being the callaway's maybe being slightly better. But for your budget (I've set mine to $300) and getting hybrids, this set should last you for the next five years or so.

You will need to find a decent driver, woods and hybrid as you can only get an iron set for that price Unless you go no name brand full sets. I just recently started playing and I built a complete set for $740. That includes:

Taylormade Burner Super Fast Driver @ $120

Taylormade Burner Superfast Fairway 3 Wood @ $100

Taylormade Burner Super launch Rescue Hybrid 3 @ $80

Taylormade Burner Plus Irons 4-PW & AW @ $290

Taylormade Lite Bag 2,0 @ $110

I already had two putters.

Also if you increased your price range you could get a full set of Adams clubs for $500 at Dicks: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12584060&cp;=4406646.4413989.4414118

Adams makes nice clubs but I went with the Burner's as Taylormade makes their clubs slightly longer than most other brands and i did not want to have to buy extensions and get my new clubs regripped.

I got a Slazenger Wrath set when I first started and still own them. They have held up well and are very forgiving. I don't know if they still make them, but worth a shot.

 L4V 9* Stiff flex

 3W-PW Reg Flex

RBZ Clone 54* Apollo Black Steel Reg Flex

Custom Bionik 504 set for crossgrip

 Cart Bag or  Stand Bag

Z Star XV or  TP Black LDP to show off

I think the OP meant a complete set.

Domp, correct me if I'm wrong, but you meant complete, as in bag, driver/woods, irons, and putter, right? If so, you probably can't go wrong with the Top Flite set. You probably won't find much for that price used anyway. This way, you'll get a shiny new set that you can use while you learn, and upgrade as you go.

Personally, I suggest a Callaway set, only because of http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com

You can buy a used set for a heavy discount, and may get lucky and get clubs that have been shortened or lengthened for you already without having to pay the pro shop price.

http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/x-20-irons/irons-x-20,default,pd.html?cgid=iron-sets

I see a 4-PW set for 271.

2013 Goal:

Single digit handicap

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
