Hello all first post here but a long time lurker. A little about me first, I am a 23 year old lefty that absolutely loves the game of golf. Unfortunately I do not know what my handicap (never calculated it) is but what is known is I generally average between 90-100 for an 18 hole round.  I use to play golf when I was younger but when I outgrew my junior set I basically stopped playing. A few seasons ago I started up again by buying a cheap complete set; well three seasons and a few lessons later I am feeling confident and ready to take the next step which is replacing my complete set with correctly fitting equipment.

Now I've heard of all the mixed reviews and sometimes horror stories coming from people getting fitted at golf galaxy // golf smith.  But my question is would that be sufficient enough for me? Someone that isn't in need of a "whole" review and fitting like golf tec or private place would offer.  I respect the people that decide to do the more in depth fittings but for me all I'm looking for is the basic fittings for an iron set (lie angle, length, shaft, grips, etc) I have no plan to be joining the PGA or anything because frankly I know my game is not that good so I don't feel I need a PGA tour level fitting. But it would be nice to have a set that fits when I go and drop 600$ or so on a set of irons.   Hopefully someone can provide some insight into this as I could not find any information from searching.  All I found was the stories from scratch to 15 handicappers which I understand usually want a more specific fitting when getting clubs (which is why they don't always recommend GG or GS.

(this is a stretch but the two places I'm considering are golf galaxy on rt 10, east hanover, nj and golf smith in bridgewater, nj just in case any locals had any previous fittings done at either of this places)

Thanks all!

TLDR: Would a custom iron fitting suffice at a place like Golf Galaxy // Golf Smith for a higher handicap player not looking for a tour level fitting that golftec or private places do for $100+

I got my clubs lengthened at Carl's golf land, which is a smaller "chain" store.

I didn't go for the whole fitting though, I plan to do that when I upgrade my irons probably this offseason.

2013 Goal:

Single digit handicap

i was fitted by the PGA pro at the golf galaxy by my place.  the guy was very knowledgeable and approachable.  the entire process took about 45 minutes.  i was almost certain before hand i was going with PING, and knew their fitting process was pretty fool proof, so i wasn't worried too much.  fwiw, it was the first time i had been fitted, so i had nothing to compare it to.

Look to that PGA teaching pro. He should have the training and the knowledge to do the fitting. The best part of your teaching pro is they have good personalized swing knowledge of your swing. If he can't do it, go somewhere that has an outdoor range. Ball flight is critical to proper fitting!

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
