I was a 12-handicapper around the turn of the century and had broken 80 maybe half a dozen times, but I'd only played perhaps three full rounds in the past 12 years before picking up the game again last month. I pretty much had to go back to square one as far as fundamentals and am in the process of piecing my game back together, slowly but surely.

The first four rounds I played all ended up in the low 90s, but today I fired an 87 and I'm pretty pumped about it. I actually only hit two greens in regulation and three-putted both of them, but my chipping was remarkably good (for me) on the back nine. I had four up-and-down pars en route to a 41 (6-over).

The score could easily have been in the low-80s with some decent ball-striking and putting on the front nine. Can't wait to get back out there, maybe sometime late this week. If I can break 80 again at some point, it might feel even better than it did the first time since I'm now older, fatter and weaker (although at least a little bit smarter, I hope).

Welcome back to golf, sounds like you will get back to your previous skill level fairly soon with playing more often and a little practice.
