Not sure how many pros/instuctors/coaches we have here on the board. I have however been wondering if there was a difference in reality between individuals that take these given titles or if tournament players want to sound special even if only to themselves

Well, let me put it this way...

Connotatively, I think a "coach" focuses more on the whole game and the person, while an "instructor" just talks about the swing. The main difference might be that the "coach" will talk about nutrition, exercise, the mental game, strategy, etc.

But really most people are a blur of that stuff anyway. We're primarily "instructors" simply because that's what people want to do, but we give the occasional playing lesson and that's more "coaching" biased.

I do think more people would improve at golf if they took a little more of a "coach" approach, but it's also a bit of a buzzword, since a lot of instructors are now billing themselves as "coaches." They'll charge a set amount per month and have only 30 students, and not do the typical "hour long lesson."

On TV and in reference to PGA Tour players, the terms are almost interchangeable.

    • Has Scottie been losing his footing on shots today or is this something he does regularly?
    • How many times does Cameron Young get his big misses to kick out into the fairway this week? Burns at #2:  his second was a penalty (unplayable), punched out, missed his fourth long.   (I asked earlier and now I know, so I'm posting in case anyone else had the question)
    • I was watching a Tiger highlight reel earlier today;  all his eagles at the Masters (all were at par-5s, except one at #14). That and this got me to thinking, what would a Sergio Garcia career highlight reel consist of?  Destroyed tee boxes, damaged tee markers, yelling at rules officials, and spitting in at least one cup. I didn't see Sam Burns's second through fourth shots at #2.  How did he end up off the green for his fifth?
    • Would he be the first winner of the Masters to be banned from Augusta!  Also, come on Sergio, you are a 46 year old over the hill golfer. Go get your Saudi paycheck and chill. You are not that good anymore to get that upset. Go enjoy your "retirement" in LIV.
    • I think this is what you are talking about him doing? Close enough? It could have changed a bit, or maybe he added an extra piece to it, so it might not look exactly the same as this.  Note, this is from 5 years ago, so it is something is just has to always do.
