Just found this site.  Been reading some of the articles, reviews, etc. and I've gotta say it's pretty awesome.  Any other NY golfers out there?  Especially around NYC?

Welcome to the site.

NYC, not exactly the most golf friendly city in the US, but if you have lots of good connections, probably one of *the* best places to play.

Where do you practice? Chelsea Piers or Randall's Island?

Where do you play? I'm guessing not Bethpage for the next two weeks, ha ha.

yeah, where do you play?

I moved to Manhattan in 2000 then migrated out to Brooklyn before winding up in Texas.  While there it seemed is was a 2+ hour commute to get to any course, play and then 2 hours back.  That's why I moth balled my clubs (other than routinely teeing up at Chelsea Piers) until recently.  My boss lived in Jersey and I played with him a few times on weekends, but to me it wasn't worth the hassle.

Forgive me, I grew up a Midwesterner that now has lived in Texas for 10 years - it's more in my comfort level than was the hustle and bustle of the boroughs.

It can definitely be tough to get out to the course from Manhattan, and the wait for stalls at the driving range at Chelsea Piers are ridiculously long, but I try to get out to Westchester and Jersey whenever I can.  I usually play in Westchester, since I grew up there.  There are some awesome private and public courses out in WC.  It's only really a 40min train out of the city, which isn't horrible.  When I'm going out with friends who don't know how to play, we'll go up to Rockland Lake State Park, but since some of my friends don't know what they're doing out there, it's usually an excuse to get out there and enjoy a couple of brews.

How is golfing down in Texas?  That's gotta be brutal during the summer.

To practice, Randall's Island is an alternative but farther than away from the city center. They raised their prices too, they are almost at Chelsea Piers level.

Commute to courses is 2+ hours by public transportation, yes, usually shorter by car though. I can get to Rockland like from my apartment in about an hour with moderate traffic, about an hour to Bethpage by car, no traffic. Traffic is what kills you if you run into it.

I've gotta check out Randall's Island.  You should look into playing Saxon Woods in Scarsdale.  It's a 40 minute train ride out of Grand Central if you don't mind bringing your clubs.  Then just a 10 minute cab ride to the course.  Decent course, but can play pretty slow at times.

I'm living in NYC as well, its definitely a struggle to get practice in.  Chelsea Piers is my main go-to, I try to go late at night in the non-peak hours (after 10:00 PM M-F, after 9:00 PM Saturday, after 6:00 PM sunday).  The price drop is pretty dramatic.

Sundays after 6:00 PM they have a special, its $20 for an hour of hitting.

I havent checked out any of the local courses yet, I've been traveling back to my parent's house in the Poconos to golf around there the last few weekends.  Im planning on trying either Van Cortland Park or Mosholu (only 9 holes, but Im still learning).

If you can make the turn by 10 AM you might still have some dry patches of clothing when you hit the club house.  Otherwise prepare to hook up an IV to hydrate aftewards

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
