Currently I'm playing a driver, 3 wood, 20* hybrid, 23* hybrid, 5i - 9i, and PW, 56* and 60* setup.  As I get better I'm able to hit lower and lower lofted irons with consistency (used to be touch and go with my 6, now I'm fairly confident with my 5 and can hit a 4i decently on the range.

Is there any reason why i shouldn't switch out the 23* hybrid for the 4i?  I would think the loss of distance would be made up for by the increased accuracy.

For me it's about consistency and what kinds of shots each club will produce. I actually carry a 4h and a 4i in my bag. I tend to hit the 4h with a much higher trajectory and find it easier to hit out of the rough. If I'm in the fairway, I will almost always go with the 4i as I find it easier to control and can get more roll with it (lower trajectory, more of a stinger). Whatever club you think you will give you the most confidence and make the shot you'll want from your 4i/4h distance is the one you should put in the bag. In my case, the clubs create two different kinds of shots, so I carry them both and pick one depending on shot situation.

One shot at a time.

What clubs are these? Are they aftermarket hybrids (not part of the set) or did you get a set with 23 degree hybrid and 4 iron? I don't see any loss of distance between a good shot with an iron and a hybrid. Hybrids tend to go too high (for me) and I prefer irons out of the rough, but who says you "should" have either one in the bag? Just carry 14 or fewer in whatever combination floats your boat.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

So why not put them both in the bag?

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
