I started broomhandling in about 1989. Back then the USGA looked at long putting and slightly to my surprise left it legal.

Imagine my joy when returning to the game after 10 years off and 1 week after buying a new 170$ putter I learned they were (again) considering a ban of long putter technique.

I started experimenting with techniques which I think have a decent chance of surviving an 'anchor' ban. I'm trying shoulder rock pendulum and 'butt pivot' methods both with the left arm completely free of the body. I'm putting better than ever. That's not saying a whole lot but it is pleasant.

I'm theorizing that there is a slight advantage in the shoulder rock technique because rather than anchoring I line the shaft up pointed right at the pivot point between my shoulders. That makes it more natural to maintain 1 solid giant lever as a pendulum.

In the butt pivot technique I think the free arm makes it easier to create a pivot which is exactly on line with the desired stroke. It also seems to be a better, more symmetrical balance with the elbow-out right arm action.

So what? Not much but I thought somebody might be interested in my preliminary experimental results.

Hopefully for your sake they don't make them illegal.  But good for you for being proactive in case they do.

Are you experimenting on these different styles with your long putter or with a short putter?
