I am a high school golfer and I want to be a college golfer. I have this problem though because the season is in the spring. I play really well throughout the summer ( mid 70s) but then come March I suck because I haven't played for 5 months because I live in Indiana. When I golf during season my scores suck throughout the year so I can't get noticed. But come summer they are great. The AD at our school is the uncle to the Michigan State golf coach and he is a great golfer. He said I'll need to improve my scoring during season to get noticed but he sees potential in me. Does anyone have any advice to help me better prepare for college golf and wart things could I do to help get recognized?

Play in the AJGA. That's where kids really get nocited these days. High School golf won't get you much unless you're the top dog and breaking par all the time.

Do you have any relatives that live in the south, ideally Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, Southern CA, etc.?  If so, any chance you can visit them over the holidays and get a few rounds in?

Otherwise you can look into setting up an indoor practice area with a net to hit into.  If you can swing it, consider a ball flight monitor system such as Optishot.  At the very least the net will give you a chance to hit balls throughout the year.

Also, stay in shape during the winter.  Look up some golf-specific training exercises to maintain your balance, flexibility, and strength.

Practice putting.  You can do that anytime in your living room.

I grew up in Michigan(although we played HS golf in the fall) and I now live in Upstate NY so I know where your coming from as far as the winter layoff. We have a indoor golf dome in my area(see avatar) so I hit balls 1-2 times a week all winter long and that is a huge advantage coming out in the spring. I've shot some of my lowest under par rounds of the year coming out of winter the last few years because I've kept my swing in form and probably because I'm so hungry to play at that point.

You may not have the luxury of a golf dome but if your serious about the game you absolutely have to find a way to at least hit full shots into a net and do some putting/chipping on carpet(may not make your mother happy chipping on her carpet, lol). When we replaced carpet in our home I used much of the old carpet to build a short game practice area in my basement.

True, hitting into nets and domes or putting/chipping on carpet is not the same as playing but what you are doing is solidifying your golf muscle memory and in the spring you will warm up to mid season form very quickly!

Good Luck!

Just as the previous posters have said, you have to swing a bit over winter. I live in Northern Maine and I may be able to play till early December but it's pretty darn cold so I usually end my season in mid-November but the season is officially done in mid-October. The courses don't usually open back up till May which is a decent layoff. With how short our seasons are I like to come out firing since tournaments start quick. I usually take a 1-2 month layoff as I play a lot of golf between my own game and coaching it, just need a break. Around February I start putting again as we have a carpet that runs to a 10 or 11 stimp and has all sorts of breaks, old farm house. I also do full swing work and do a lot of recording and slow swings and then just hit a bunch of balls into a net a couple time per week. When the season starts I usually come out hitting a few strokes above my average and it takes me about 2 weeks to get myself back in shape fully.
