I've taken a lesson every 3 weeks to month and half for the last few months.  The rest of the time I go to the range and play as many rounds as I can.  I've realized that a lesson everyone once in a while just isn't going to cut it.  Every time I make progress, it eventually fades and I go back inconsistent (to say the least) contact and slices/hooks off the tee.

Anyone have any advice on how often a relative newbie (started playing seriously about 5 monts ago) should take lessons? I'm thinking every other week.

Every other week sounds like a great plan. Just out of curiosity, does your pro give a discount to people who take more than 5-10 lessons a year? If you ask nicely, I've managed to get a 15% price reduction on my lessons since I normally take them weekly to biweekly depending on the weather.

Not sure, but i'll definitely ask.

how long have you taken lessons/intend to take lessons?  Obviously tour pros have coaches, so i could theoretically take a lesson a week forever, but since no one is paying me to play i don't think that's going to happen.

Also, do you find swing improvements tend to stick better with more frequent lessons?

I have taken lessons like that for the past two seasons, albeit a short one both years due to snowstorms into April and May. I always found it helpful to have the lesson, because you can catch little issues that would turn into larger ones a lot faster, as well as being told whether or not your are correcting your problem the right way before it becomes too deeply ingrained. The past summer has mostly been spent working on a lot of course management for me, with maybe 15 minutes on the range and then 45 minutes playing around 4-5 holes with the instructor and trying out different shots and strategies.

I just picked the game back up this season after about 10 years away and at first I was hesitant to take lessons but then I decided to take the plunge and I've been taking weekly or bi-weekly lessons with Golftec for about the last 3 months now and while my scores haven't dropped as much as I'd like I definitely understand what my issues are and working on them regularly like that with the video feedback you get from their programs definitely helps you nip issues in the bud before the become much harder to fix.  I had grip issues, we fixed that in a week, I was having hip rotation issues or lack there of and now I've addressed that to the point that I'm pretty consistently within the tour average on my swings.  The issue(s) I'm working on now are releasing the club early by flipping my wrists and not allowing for a full follow through.  We've been working on that for the last 2 weeks and each lesson it gets a little bit better.

Overall consistent lessons definitely help you to address whatever issues you're specifically having with your swing or your game and really ingrain what you need to do to fix them due to the repetition required from lessons.

    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
