Well, after seeing many golfers, both pro and ametuer, switching to hybrid clubs, I have decided it is time for me to ditch my 3 and 4 irons and replace them with hybrids.

Now, as I have found out, there are a lot of options out there when looking for new clubs. I have been researching different types of hybrids, but I thought I would ask for the advice of some who already have hybrids.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I actually just replaced my 3 iron a few days ago with a 21 degree Titleist 585.H. Over the last few weeks I tried a couple of hybrids, the Callaway X Hybrid, the Nickent 3DX, the TaylorMade Dual TP and the Cobra Baffler. Decided I wanted to go with steel over graphite as I found it a little more consistant. the weight was more like an iron and as it's replacing an iron so thought it was the way to go.

To be honest I liked all of them especially when compared to a 3 iron. Though thought the TaylorMade was a little heavy, the head is quite heavy as it is but with a steel shaft... although they put an ultralight in there, probably for that reason. It also costs heaps more

One thing to note is that I'm getting an extra 10-15 yards with the hybrid over the 3 iron (a Mizuno MP-FLIHI). Which is a good thing I guess but it now means I have a gap of 25-30 yards over my 4 iron. Tried the 18 degree as well and hitting that within 10 yards of what I hit my Steelhead Plus 3W. So might have to look into 3 woods (tried the Mizuno F-50 by the way and loved that )

In the end I went with the Titleist (it came down to the Callaway and the Titleist). The Nickent was really nice but I was hitting a graphite as they didn't have a steel shaft in store. The Callaway was hitting maybe 5 yards longer, but the length of the Titleist and it's swingweight, a D2, were the same as 3 iron it was replacing. The Callaway is 1/4" longer and a D3. I chose the Titleist for no other reason. I think they are both awesome clubs.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Titleist 585.H. I currently have the TM rescue dual 19*, which replaces my 3-iron. I like it alot, but I pretty much only use it when I drive into the rough on par 4/5's, and need a club to hit it fairly far and out of the rough. I don't use it off the tee or on the fairway that much, because I have a 5 wood which basically the same loft which I use for fairway shots.

I know this is what everyone says, but go to your local golf shop and hit a couple ones that you are thinking about, and get the one that you feel most confident with.

Good luck

I absolutely love my 23* Cobra Baffler, and I am actively considering getting two more of them (two more Cobra Bafflers, not two more 23* ones). I will hit them for the second shot on a par-5 more often than not, since I can hit them better than a fairway wood (I'm considering replacing a 5-Wood with a hybrid, but I'm not sure which loft to use), and it's worth the extra club or so into the green to have a good position.

Thanks everyone.

I will go out to my local golf shop and hit a few and hopefully find one that I like. I'm really looking forward to getting a hybrid, because I can't hit my 3 or 4 irons 10 feet.

Thanks everyone.

Keep them in the bag and use them for your short chips, when you have very little green to work with.

Let us know how it goes.

i really like my taylormade TP. its one of the few hybrids out there which doesn't have a draw face.

I love the Adams Pro series hybrids. They also do not have a draw face, which was a big sell with me. Also, they come with the Aldila Proto shaft.

I wonder if anyone has any experience with the Bobby Jones hybrids ( http://www.bobbyjonesgolf.com/)? They have a different design, actually looks more like a fairway wood then a hybrid. Does anyone have any experience with them, good or bad? Thanks.

The 585h is my favorite because it looks square or slightly open at address and the weight of the club feels great from grip to the head. I hit it the most consistent (yardage and direction ) over any other hybrid I tried and played with. I've also played tried the adams a2, TM dual and rescue mid, and the Cobra baffler. The TM would be my second favorite.

    • If you’ve been playing over sixty years that means you’re not as young as you used to be, welcome to the club. Most people I play with are 70+ and we all seem to have issues. Couple of the guys have had cancer, heart issues and strokes but still doing the best they can. But not what they used to. Some are where they probably should just play nine holes because at about fifteen they are starting to struggle quite a bit. My scores are creeping up each year, don’t like it but it’s better than sitting in the recliner. Good luck.
