In my quest to find an iron thats not going to balloon like crazy and give me the distance i feel my swing speed warrants.. I went searching for the strongest lofted iron sets on the market and heres what i came up with.

In order.. 8 iron lofts.

1. Mizuno mx-23's... 37*
2. Cleveland TA7's ... 37*
3. Callaway x-14 pro series... 37.5*
4. Titleist 695cb... 38*
5. Cobra Carbon CB's... 38*

r7XD..... 8 iron loft.... 34*???!!!

I played the MX-23's and now i realize why i was hitting a 6 iron 185 and am now hitting a 6 iron 170-175, some of those individuals have as much as 3 more degrees of loft than my old 690.cb's. Mizuno makes alot of strong lofted clubs, older callaways and cleveland seem to jack up their lofts more than anyone. If you know of any other strong lofted clubs add to the list. As of now im in the market for one of these sets, minus the rediculously gimmicky R7 XD.

You're right, Taylormade makes some ridiculously strong lofted clubs. I usually look at the 6 iron instead of the 8, I've discovered in my research that most game-improvement 6 irons are in the 28-30 range, while most players irons are usually 31 or so. A Taylormade from a year or two ago had 26* for a 6, I'm sorry but that's a 5! Mis-informed people will hit a TM 6 iron and they'll start thinking "Man, these are a club longer than mine!" Yeah, because you're hitting a 5 technically!

If you look at most forged clubs, like the Titleist 755's I've been looking at, you can custom order them not only for lie angle, but you can order the loft +/- 2 degrees as well. That way you can get the loft you want.

Would a 1 degree loft change create much difference in terms of ball flight and distance? How many degrees need to be changed to see noticeable difference? Tks.

With each degree change, you will see a difference in distance and ball flight. And I would just have those 690.CBs bent 2* strong instead of getting a new set of clubs.. Its very inexpensive too

Does it really matter? Anyways they have a stamp on them as being advertised as the longest set of irons you will ever hit. Xtra distance, though it has nothing to do with the material of the club it just has rediculously strong loft's. Like tglover said technically 34* isnt even an 8 iron, its closer to a 6 or 7.

And i probably should just keep them but quite frankly i hate them. That and the fact that nobody wants them, i've been trying to sell them for 2 months and finally think i may have unloaded them on ebay for a measly $157 US.

Someone who is good enough to make consistent contact could probably tell a bit of difference between a 31* 6 iron and a 29* 6 iron. Somebody like me who hits one thin and the next one fat, it probably doesn't matter. I've always played 6 irons at 30* and PW at 46*, and I like to keep it that way. The rest of my bag is set to fill in the gaps using those lofts.

And I think gimmicky could be a good word to describe VERY strong lofted clubs like TM does. I'm not a TM guy, but it's nothing against them. Callaway just did it too by putting a 46" shaft on the FT-i. For some reason I view giving clubs longer shafts and very strong lofts and other things like that deceiving, it just bugs me.

It's funny, I just went and checked the specs on two of the irons I hit while getting fitted last year. The Cally X-18s had 37* on the 8 iron, and the Cobra FP has 36. I didn't like the Cobras because I hit them higher than the Callaways. :? The FP irons are a D1 swingweight... I wonder if that has something to do with it. The lofts are a bit counterintuitive to the results they produced.

For the guys with new irons... Absolute first thing to check is the loft and lie of the new sticks.

I posted this in another thread and it is important.

Consistency in your equipment will reward you as you improve. Additionally, depending on how much you play and how you treat your clubs, I advise checking loft/lie at least once a year for an avid player. Especially if you are playing any forged iron.

What about the Taylor Made R7 TP's? I thought I read somewhere that those have strong lofts as well.

Ummm are you to say that the titanium plays no part in the distance. Actually the XD's are very close to the rac os 2 in loft.

I play the XD's and personally I wish they werent so strong. However its not like it affects my game. I have 3 wedges that fill the gap and carry all the clubs I need in my bag without suffering. I dont know why somebody would call it a gimmick though. Its just stronger lofts. Its not like theyre making the shape different and saying youll never slice again. If you cant hit the ball then it doesnt matter what club you play.

whatever dude, its a gimmick that they call it the longest iron u'll ever hit as a marketing ploy to get you to buy it.. and the reason its so is because the lofts are so strong. If gimmicky's the wrong word.. sue me. Good for you that you play them, I personally wouldnt mind hitting them to see if the 4 degree's difference does improve my distance.

Well that certainly makes sense as to why I instantly gained 10 yards on each club when i got my TM R7's.

The stronger lofts coming out now on the game improvement irons are to counteract the low and deep center of gravity on these irons. I hit an R7 XD 7 iron and RAC LT 7 iron side by side. The XD 7 iron loft is 30* and RAC 7 iron (original model) loft is 35* I found no appreciable distance gain with the XD. I hit the XD much higher with a lot less roll and the RAC LT had a much more boring trajectory. The biggest difference to me wasn't the loft of the irons but trying to figure out where I want to land the ball. There is definitely an adjustment to be made when playing these strong lofted game improvement irons but total distance doesn't seem to be one of them in my testing. I'm sure other opinions will vary.

Not so. There is a 3* difference between these sets from the 5 iron through 8 iron. 2* difference between the rest of the set.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
