so some of you may remember my thread a week or so ago about buying a driver i had never hit before:

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6521

well ive hit it for 3 days now and i don't like it.
first the performance, on good hits it is shorter than my launcher by a noticeable amount. and on decent hits, it seems to have insane amounts of backspin because it goes so high in the air. its a 9.5 degree and still touches the stratosphere... my 9.5 launcher doesn't go nearly as high. i don't know if this is the shaft (V2 stiff 76g) because i thought i loved that shaft from my demo day session hitting a 907D2 but i don't know, i just don't like this driver. maybe im not good enough to wield it but it just doesn't suit me.

the other thing, as i mentioned in my previous thread, the sound is TERRIBLE. it sounds like the driver is dead and sounds so dull and lifeless. even when i hit it right in the sweet spot very hard, it sounds like doodoo. now if the performance was great, i wouldn't mind the awful sound but the subpar performance coupled with such a dissatisfying sound put me over the top and ive put it back on ebay.

back to the performance of the club, is it primarily the shaft that is causing the backspin and possibly the loss of distance? i have a fairly quick swing (around 115mph swing speed) and definitely like the feel of the heavier shaft. i thought i was losing distance/consistency with the aldila nv65-stiff but im definitely longer with it than the v2. i guess i really need to hit both heads in the same shaft but i always thought the shaft makes up the vast majority of driver performance.

theres a adams and cleveland demo day this week at my driver range so ill try and head to that to see if they can recommend a shaft for me.

I think you decided you didnt like it based on the sound, the fastest hitters in the game play V2's. I think bubba has a pink one? As for the 905R, I hit this club poorly for a week. Then fell in love with it. Give it a chance, if you got it @ golfsmith you have 90 days to take it back, try it a bit longer and give it a chance.

well i really wanted to love the V2. i hit it at a demoday and i thought it was a great fit. i read all about how it was made for faster, more aggressive swing types and that confirmed my suspicions even more.

i will admit that the sound is a large factor is my dissatisfaction with the club. even on well struck balls and went over 300 yards, the sound was depressing and i love hearing a good drive. it sounds so bad, the thought of it being a fake club head entered my mind. i can't believe anyone could actually like the sound of this driver. at first, i thought i was just spoiled by the loud crack of my launcher but after hitting over 200 balls at the range and playing 36 holes, i just can't enjoy this club.

is there a way online to check the authenticity of a club? it has a serial number of the hosel. i got this club off ebay so no returning it.

Bubba's shaft isn't the V2, no. It's the BiMatrix with a steel tip.

You're a 27 index who hits the ball 300 yards? Do you have some ocean-front property in Idaho to sell me too?

If the 905R sounds like it should (i.e. it's not broken or somehow counterfeit or defective), that's the way drivers should sound. Not this FT-5/FT-i/Sumo sound we've kind of gotten used to. My 905R and my 907D2 reviews laid out the differences, and one of them is that the 905R is "spinnier." I didn't like it for that reason, but I love my 907D2.

well i was around 27 when i signed up, i can usually break 90 now. well with the 905R over this weekend, i only hit it over 300 in the fairway once. on the range, 300 isn't marked so i don't know how far i hit it there but with my launcher, ive hit plenty over 300. my longest is 375 downwind and i drove the green on a 342 yard par 4 last week. just because i can hit it far with driver doesn't mean my scores should be low. my game isn't very consistent but i can definitely hit the ball far.

i remember hitting the 905 and i know what you mean about sound, its awful, it also doesnt go anywhere for me and i agree i dont like the driver much either. I guess this gives you a lesson, always try before you buy.

I'm currently playing the 905R and its been in the bag for over a year or so. I like the club when I'm playing well but the club just offers no forgiveness. If I'm not spot on I have to hit my hybrid off the tee, leaving me with some distance issues on approach shots.

part of me wants to go out and get a club is more forgiving, the other half wants to sack up and learn to play well with what I have. I am an impulse buyer and a golf tech freak... why I can't be happy with what I have?

crazy... i hit the ball high with the lighter tfd crap stock shaft that came in my g5.. it would launch good but baloon up and just land and stop. I had a precision saber 75g in it and it fixed the balooning!

funny thing is when i got the shaft installed it made the g5 make a crappy crack sound instead of that clean pinkkk sound! oh well i hit it ok!

If you can drive 342 yards you realize you need to go sign up for a long drive competition, those guys with 55"-60" drivers win entire events with 350 yard drives.. Just imagine what you would do with a long driver, you're 342 yards will easily go up 30% and that's well over 400 yards.. Let me know, I think you seriously have a chance, plus they use like 5 degree heads. Seriously, I am signing you up!! PM your information and location

I thought I made a mistake buying the 905R right after I demoed it. I gave it some time and concentrated a little more on my swing and I am glad I made the purchase. Making good contact with the 905R is very rewarding. I don't mind the sound - have grown to like it in a way.

hitting the ball 300 yards and handicap don't necessarily correlate...my buddy hits it about 330 off the tee, but it flies all over God's green earth. He has trouble breaking 100 because he hardly ever plays, but is 6'4" and a big guy. And he does hit it over 300 almost every time, so it's not like we're counting only the best shots.

I've got the 905T and the 905R both with the same graphite design shaft and I like the T much better that the R. Some times bigger and newer isn't better and the v2 shaft is supposed to go low.

By the way if you are trying to sell that club I'd bash it less. Play up the long, low boring shots. Tough to get a good price with "this thing sucks want to buy it"?

I had the 905R for about a year. It came with a graphite design ys 6. I actually kind of liked the club. The sound was a little dull but that is just Titleist. I went with a Ping for more forgivness but the 905R performed like a champ when I had my A game in tune...

375 yards???

thats deep man. the V2 is a VERY spinny shaft, it does what its sup post to do quite well, its high launch high spin. My guess is its the wrong shaft for you, but ive never seen a 27 hdcp who needed A lower ballflight. Try re shafting it or hitting a demo with something more low launch. BTW that nasty sound your talking about isnt really nasty, its just muted. Some drivers are muted some (fti) are really loud.

Uhhhh...

Proforce V2 75 is a mid-weight shaft with a mid/high flex point, medium/stiff tip and medium butt. This shaft plays similar to the Fujikura 757 at a slightly lower weight. For medium/fast tempo golfers with faster swing speeds looking for lower launch with lower spin. Flex Point: Mid/High Trajectory: Low/Mid

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
