I went to the Nelson on Saturday with my young son - made him walk 6 holes whist - it was hot, humid and windy ... but not as windy as today. Players were sweating like it was mid-summer. Glad there was some wind.

At the 5th hole (par 3), we had turned to go back towards 1, and Duffner was walking towards us after teeing off. There were no ropes on the par 3. I thought about quickly "Duffnering" but would have had to explain it to my son, and by that time, he would have walked by ... don't know if it would have pissed him off or he'd laugh. He looked at me and the boy as he walked by ... with a giant chaw under his lip. laugh He does have a bit of a belly.

That is a weird course. DA Weibring did great work around the greens and with the greens. There seemed to be 3 levels on each green, not much rough except around the bunkers ... the areas off the green were sloped and angled downwards ... and TIGHT.

It showed me again how good these guys are ... to hit the right level or near it.

Anyway, back to the course, holes 1 & 2 is where people first meet the course, there is a lot of crowd noise, as the 17th green is just behind #1 green. If you're accustomed to quiet golf with respectful crowds, the golf seems an afterthought on 1 & 2 as people are getting acclimated to being there and going off to other holes. I followed Charlie Wi (stack and tilt guy) who did not putt well, but was amazed at how controlled these guys were with their swings as opposed to normal golfers ... it's another galaxy. Wi had the form down  and was fundamentally so sound with the full swing. Putting is another matter.

Anyway, were' going to the 3rd green and houses were on top of the green, no more than 40 yards away... and people were swimming in their pools having parties and kids screaming .... and a few yards away, PGA Tour Pros are making their living, chipping and putting, amidst the mayhem. After 3, the course settles down ... but when you get to 16-18, it's a party...

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
