Testing out some irons

3 posts in this topic

Hey guys!

So i'm looking to try out some new irons in the next few days, and I had a couple questions for you guys :D

First of all, obviously knowing which irons are "the best" for me would be pretty much trial and error to see which ones fit me best and to see which ones feel the best to me.

I just wanted to ask you guys if you had any suggestions for irons that I should try out and try hitting?

Here's some info about what i'm looking for: I like irons that are not as chunky or big looking at address, something with a thin top-line. My current irons are Taylormade Rac's from like 2005 or something (they're my dad's old irons). Im looking to get irons that are somewhere in between a cavity back and a blade..is there a name for this? Muscle back? For the price point, thats not too much of an issue as I have been saving up for a long time and I will be using them a lot for tournaments and such, so a little bit on the $$ is not too big of a deal. Right now, I am thinking of maybe the MP-59s, or AP2's? Potentially the S56's as well and maybe some callaways. Anyways, I'd really appreciate your guys' help in this one! Thanks so much for reading :D

Cheers

Personally I have Cobra Amp Irons and I absolutely love them. They're very very long and straight as well. I can spin the ball and change the flight pretty easily with them as well. I don't like the bright colors on the grips, but the lamkin grips that they came with werent my favorite either. You can easily change those.

I just went through the purchasing process for a new set of irons and I will try to outline my thoughts on the different Irons I hit. From the clubs you mentioned, I think the MP59s are probably more closely related to the AP1s. The AP2s are not very forgiving whereas the AP1s will help in that area a little more while still giving control.

The different clubs I hit included AP2, AP1, MP64, Cobra (Amp Pro?) and Callaway X forged.

AP2: Coming from the 2008-9 model of AP2 irons I wanted to test out the latest model. To me nothing really changed from the irons I had to what I hit. They are solid irons but not as forgiving as what I wanted (why I decided to switch from my AP2s). The feel is the feel you get from a forged club, but nothing special in my opinion.

AP1 : I liked the AP1s, but the Golfsmith store I was at didn't have a full fitting cart from Titleist yet so I didn't go any further than the demo 6iron they had. The shaft combo was not the best fit for me so the results were mixed. Again the feel with these were alright, but nothing special.

Cobra Amp Pro: I really liked this offering from Cobra. The demo 6 iron I hit felt really nice and results were fairly consistent. The feel was very good, probably a little better than the AP1/2 and in line with the Callaways that I hit.

Callaway X Forged: I have never been a Callaway fan. I started playing with a set of X14 steelheads back in high school so I decided to give them a shot. The ball definitely feels good when struck well and the club looks great at address. My results with the irons were not as good as the cobras or the mizunos.

Mizuno MP64: After 1 hit with these irons I understood what the big fuss about Mizuno's grain flow forging process is all about. When struck well you don't even feel the ball coming off the irons. A slight mishit is noticeable once hit; however, they are still forgiving enough that you aren't punished too much. At address these irons look nice, probably not as nice as the Callaways, but a very close 2nd. The overall look of these clubs are very nice, nothing extravagant just a solid design. One thing I liked about the Mizunos and the others might have done this as well and I just didn't notice, but the cavity decreases as you approach the PW. This allows for more forgiveness with your long irons and more control of shot shape with your short irons.

I ended up ordering a custom fitted set of MP64s

    • I didn't think this was appropriate to put in the Contest thread, but I predicted that the Ryder Cup will end in eerily similar fashion to the 2015 Newport Cup, with the eldest Euro chipping in on the 18th, to win his match and halve the overall Cup.
    • After finally clearing my head from that 90 minutes of assault on the grey matter, I've come to the conclusion that trying to do the mental gymnastics necessary to make sense out of what Clinton and Trump were saying made me dumber for about 24 hours. Especially Trump. I still can't believe one party actually nominated him. IMO he's a buffoon. A school yard bully who got thoroughly beat up, despite scoring a few points early on. But scoring points isn't what it's about to me. It's making sense and hearing policy and whether or not said policies violate the Constitution.  In my opinion, both candidates need to read that document. In my opinion, our law makers need to read that document because they're writing laws that tread on the edges of violating our rights. Take the Comprehensive Crime Bill of 1984 otherwise known as the War on Drugs for example. It created a bunch of forfeiture laws where the government can seize property if they have reasonable cause that a drug related crime has been or is being committed. This has lead to people who are transporting large sums of cash having that seized by law enforcement. Buying airline tickets with cash is a red flag to law enforcement. They want a credit record of your purchase. If you are pulled over for speeding, an officer may ask you how much cash you are carrying. Of course you don't have to answer him, but most people think that they have nothing to hide so they tell the officer. If the amount is over a couple hundred, the officer may have a K-9 unit come sniff the car and even if they find nothing, they may confiscate the cash saying that you were going to buy drugs with it at your destination. You can't prove that you weren't. They let you go. It's your property that got charged with the crime. 4th Amendment violation? Where's the due process? No Fly No Buy? Or Terrorist Watch list no buy? These lists are secret lists. Both candidates endorse this practice to infringe on the 2nd Amendment. Where's the due process? It's some secret process. You don't know you're on it, and once you're refused a purchase you get to petition the government to appear before the Senate to clear your name. Good luck with that. This is a violation of the 5th and 6th amendments. Holt should have gone after both Clinton and Trump on this. People told me that "Trump would protect our rights here. He has the backing of the NRA." I knew he would sell us out because he's a moron. I was right. He was agreeing with Clinton. Stop and frisk? Under Terry, law enforcement has to have reasonable suspicion that you're about to commit a crime. This means something like casing an establishment. Walking in a group doesn't give reasonable suspicion. That's a violation of the 4th amendment.  In the end I felt dumber after watching this. I did stupid things for the next 24 hours. It gave me a headache. I think I'll skip the next one. Both candidates are disasters. It's just that one is an intelligent disaster and the other is a moron. And Trump cannot go more than 10 minutes without putting his foot in his mouth. He doesn't get to say something where it's recorded on video and then say he never said it. That doesn't wash. He needs fat people to vote for him. He needs women to vote for him and instead of apologizing he insulted us again. He needed Afro-Americans and he brought up stop and frisk - racial profiling? He doesn't think it would be applied without racial profiling? Are you kidding me? That's all I have to say. I have to go out and stock up on ammo before there's a shortage. I'm not expecting a war. It's target plinking ammo, but you know how people get.
    • For me this is something I continue to work on.  For me what works is making as big of a turn on my backswing as I can and thinking "slam my hands down" at the start of my downswing.  Of course all that is to keep me from going over the top.
    • Team Europe retains the Ryder Cup by tying the matches, 14-14. Rory McIlroy will lead Europe with 3.5 points (3-1-1). Lee Westwood will clinch the overall tie for the Ryder Cup for Europe by winning his match on the 18th hole.
