I am having major trouble fixing my OTT swing. If I consciously think about opening my hips more on my backswing, will that help by giving me more room to drop the club? I can't find a swing thought to get the downswing started properly so I am looking for any ways to help. Thanks.

I've been working on it for years. For me a few swing thoughts work to some degree:

  • Swing to 1st base
  • Low right shoulder at impact
  • Start the downswing from the lower body and let the rest of the body follow naturally

Not that I think about all of them at the same time...just things I have worked on over the years. I found that if I over exaggertate the above thoughts in my practice swings, I tend to get something closer to a reasonable swing path when I hit the ball.

It's likely that it can't hurt.

Let's imagine your hips rotate 60 degrees from the top of your backswing to impact. Let's imagine you only turn them back 10 degrees during your backswing. They'll be 50 degrees open at impact.

Now imagine if they turn back 35 degrees. They'll be 25 open at impact, and give you a better chance of coming less over the top (an "INward" swing direction).

So it likely can't hurt, but I'm guessing there are some other factors which contribute to your issues than your hips.

There are definitely other factors, I just don't know how to fix them. I spin out with my shoulders to start my downswing and I am looking for any ways that I can get myself to swing in sequence. Any other swing thoughts are appreciated. Thanks
