I can hit my Callaway 20* 3 hybrid, though, about the same distance as either of my 1 irons with a good bit more ease and consistency, especially off the fairway. Off the tee In the wind , there may be some advantage to the 1 iron because of the trajectory.

Yes, I kind of miss my DCI Blacks. I had them made up for me when I worked at Titleist and were outfitted with Rifle Shafts.  I sold them on EBAY but even though I like my Hogan Edge set, the DCI's were a fine set of irons.  The only 2 iron I ever owned was with an old set of Bobby Jones which had Driver, 3W,4W,5W and 2 through SW. The swing weights were D4 I believe. I think they were made by Spalding.

For me, what makes a hybrid a hybrid is bulge and roll versus a flat face.  Hybrids have bulge and roll just like woods.     I own a set of hollow irons, but because they have flat faces like irons, I call them irons.

The complaint against blades is involved here too and muddies the discussion about 1-irons.      To clarify the issue under debate, there are 1-iron blades, Muirfield 20ths for example, and then there are 1-iron cavity back irons, for example Armour 845c or Ping Eye.   Cavity-back 1-irons are not as hard to hit.

Back in the day, it was not uncommon to see a PING 1 iron riding in the bags of pros and better amateurs, even if the rest of the irons were blades. I am neither a good player nor a poser, but I do like to try to hit the 1 iron. Most of the time,I can keep it in the fairway about 195-210 with a kinda weak fade. Yesterday, I hit probably the best 1 iron I have ever hit with my "butter knife". A medium par 4 along a ridge with trouble left and right, it is 379 on the card. I was well inside the 150 marker and straight down the middle. It would have been "ho-hum" for Tiger, but pretty good for me!

I love long irons but I dont exactly hit them as well as Id like to.  Theres nothing that feels better than a pure shot with a long iron.  When I was in my early 20s, the only wood that I carried was a driver and I was actually pretty good at hitting even a 1-iron off the tee (forget about it off the deck though).

I do feel though that much of the perception that long irons are impossible to hit and that everyone should be gaming 3, 4 and even 5 hybrids is a bunch of nonsense though.  If long irons are so impossible to hit, how then did the old-timers hit them with clubs that are supposedly vastly inferior to what we have today?  Just like with any other shot, you have to work at it.

A lot of has to do with the 1 and 2 irons being out of "vogue" and they are not usually included in a set now so golfers coming into the game in recent years just did not have the experience of learning how to hit them. The hybrids and newer fairway woods are simply easier to hit and given the choice, would be the wiser clubs to use.   I do not consider myself as an old timer exactly, but when I started playing some 40 years ago, that is what we had. I am not saying hitting a one iron off the deck is "easy" but since I practice a lot with one, it is not as difficult for me. As I mentioned in a similar thread, I have even been pitching with one in practice and it does help me build a better tempo.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
